My Mom has been gone for 34 years now, but I remember her cooking very well. Everything she made was great. She was the one who first sparked my interest in cooking, and I was always in the kitchen standing on a chair trying to help her. The only thing she ever made that I didn't like was liver & onions and spinach, I hated it. As an adult though, I freakin' love liver & onions and spinach. Great, now I want some.....

Brains. And Liver.

I've eaten a lot of crazy stuff over the years including calf/turkey fries, oysters on the half shell, sashimi, pickled eggs, you name it. But those two were on the " Uh Uh" list since I was a little kid and it aint gonna change.

I tried liver once as a kid and puked it up. Brains, they never made it in my mouth. I watched her pour the calf brains in the skillet in horror and refused to open it when the spoonful of brains and eggs was offered up for sampling. And no amount of coaxing, bribes or threats could change my mind.

No. No. No.

Same for me...couldn’t stand liver then, or now....refuse to eat it to this day.... barf

Everything else was great....

I called mine Momma. She was the best Momma anyone could ask for. She was a great back in the day ,especially with the ingredients available. I never had a rare steak until I. Went away to college. She cutup her chicken leaving a pulley bone, and pan fried it. Reminds me of a neighbor who went back to east Texas for a wake. He couldn't wait for his aunt's fried chicken. She had gotten it from KFC.

My Momma was the beast at fruit pies. She made the edges stand up almost an inch. She also canned and pickled enough to take us through the winter.

Edited to add that my Mom was an excellent cook so it wasn't her cooking, it was just the liver!!! barf

Mom made great liver and onions smothered in cream gravy. She served it with rice. If you didn’t like the liver (most of us did) you ate rice and gravy. I still make it just like she did.

Also, Luby's cafeterias packed them in on. Liver and onions day.

I'll second liver and onions. My mom cooked it about once a month. My dad would eat it and ask for seconds and rave about it. I could never understand how he ate it. Salty, overcooked to a horrible mush consistency not far from pate.

My mom was gone a couple of years when my sister volunteer to cook liver and onions for my dad when we were at a family gathering. My dad got this horrified look on his face and after a few second turned red and said.."Please tell me you do not have your mother's recipe?'

We laughed till we hurt as he told the story about my mom's first couple of attempts at liver & onions failing. The third time she tried, he could not stand the look of disappointment on her face, so he told her that recipe was great! Well, the woman could certainly follow a recipe. She carefully duplicated it for 20+ years.

We all need to practice Whoa more.

I just loved to eat and don't remember ever eating too many things cooked at home that I thought was "bad" ... When my wife came along, she shattered my thoughts of everything being good as she did not care in the least for my mother's cooking ... I still never thought any of it was "bad" but my wife sure has different tastes and likes than me for sure. The few things that my mother tried to cook that I thought was unbearable, I honestly don't think anyone could have prepared it to be edible ... CO mule deer and wild duck, the whole house stunk to high heaven.

Pretty sure many here already knew you never had any brains.

My mom is a good cook. But back in the late 80’s she some how thought white rice and a jar of Pace equaled Spanish rice. It is by far the worst thing she ever made. sick

My momma never cooked a bad meal and that`s the truth. She did cook some things that I "to this day " do not like to eat though. I would give anything for just one more meal with her.

Can’t think of anything she messed up, but I was not a fan of pasta aside from spaghetti growing up and refused to eat others. I also couldn’t stand stewed tomatoes. Yes I went to bed hungry a time or two, picking my battles even at 10-12 years old.

Mom hated to cook. Her mom died when she was 15 and my grandfather rushed her off to Texas (as she was fond of saying - "THE University") at 17. She met Dad and one slightly less than a year later after they were married, my oldest brother was born. In 1941, you didn't attend class pregnant, so she dropped out SIX HOURS shy of an English degree. bang
Everything she learned to cook was from her mother-in-law (whom she later admitted to me feeling guilty about joining in with her two sister-in-laws bitching about) and whatever she could clip out of the newspaper. I have a raggedy old notebook/cookbook, circa maybe 1910 (or even older), with all kinds of writing in it, maybe from her mom, maybe from her mother-in-law, maybe from before them, with modern (1950s-1960s) newspaper clippings stuffed in between the pages. I wouldn't change a thing.

All this to say...Salmon Croquettes. We all dreaded them with a purple passion. barf

That is awesome to have! I was about to take possession of my Momma’s cook book (she died when I was 9). It was loaded with recipes from her, my Grandmother, and Great Grandmother with lots of old notes and handwriting. That book was one of the few things of hers that survived our house fire. Anyway....I was pretty excited about getting it, but Hurricane Harvey beat me to it and took her cook book with my Sister’s house.

And I miss my Granny B’s salmon patties! They were a staple at her house. Seasoned & crispy fried in cornmeal. I’ve tried to replicate hers several times but it’s not the same. bang

When I was real young my mother's cooking was sub par. But she stuck with it. Now I compared not to my grandma's cooking and that's a tough row to hoe.

This tread reminds me of the old deer camp joke about the first one who complained the cooking.

Never a complaint at the dinner table when I was growing up. I can't really recall anything that she made that wasn't good. She did go through a phase where she thought that aloe vers juice was some miracle drink. We had to take a shot of that nasty stuff every morning for a few months. Blech!

I would have to go with liver and onions also. Such a disgusting taste.
Not sure if her concoction had an official name but: ground beef, tomatoes, green beans, peas, & corn in a taco like sauce. Topped it off with globs of mash potatoes and tomato sauce. I like all of the ingredients but putting them all together was nasty.
