Wife's Tahoe had a check engine light come on today....code is P0303, cylinder 3 misfire. Smells like gas and motor seems to be lurching when on and idling, she also said she noticed some smoke when driving and the vehicle was shaking a little with reduced power. Any auto experts have any idea what this means or possible cause/repair? It's a 2018, 43k miles.

Thanks for the help.

If over 100000 miles, and plugs have been changed already, my first suspect would be coils. As you have only 43 k, pull the coil and see if there is any water down in the plug reservoir. Water could be coming from washing the engine, or from rain leaking to where it isn't supposed to go, or coolant leak.

Ohm the wires to the coil while your there.

I’d replace the #3 coil and all the plugs.

PM me if you want help.

Our Tahoe’s at work go in the shop all the time for similar issues. They never get right

With that few miles it shouldn't have any ignition system problems, unless rodent damage.
Of course you can't rule out anything until it is checked.

The 5.3 has a long history of developing vacuum leaks, with the code signifying #3 I do a thorough job of leak detection on the intake manifold around #3.
The 6.2 has issues with the cylinder deactivation going wonky, usually starts with one cylinder, if ignored gets worse.

I doubt it still has warranty 3yr / 36,000 miles.
The limited powertrain 5/60,000 covers the parts for limited items related to the powertrain.
Misfire due to ignition system, rodent damage, faulty wiring wouldn't be covered.
Intake manifold gasket and faults in the powertrain control system ( ECU, PCM, BCM etc..) would be.

Of course some dealers take really good care of good customers, probably worth a call.

If it was caused by abuse neglect or a rodent then sure they probably wont cover it. Its under powertrain warranty id take it in and let them tell me why it wont work.

Insurance would probably pay for rodent damage.

I misread the OP at 43k a coil would be my first guess.

That’s pretty low mileage for an intake gasket, not saying it’s impossible though

Yep. Squirrel got after a neighbors car. Insurance paid.

Not sure on the 2018 models, but the 5.3 with DOD also has issues with stuck lifters, same symptoms described.

Swap that coil with one on a different cylinder and see if the problem follows. I just went through this and it wound up being an injector but this was the easiest way for me to diagnose and rule out issues without throwing parts at it.
