Currently I have the a RCBS bullet puller. It's the kind where it's a die, u run the cartridge up the press until the nose of the buller is in a collet, turn the handle and then you have to pull the bullet. This worked well enough but I've never been happy with it. I wanted to pull some 308 178gr eld bullets and I was either severely mangling the bullet or it slips and I get nothing.

I'm looking for bullet puller recommendations. Preferably something that works well and doesn't destroy the bullet. Thanks in advance.

I have the RCBS and the similar Hornady and both work equally so not sure changing will help. Might try just seating each round down about .020 and see if that helps.
It will break the tension and make them easier to pull if they have been loaded a while. Doesn't always work but it's helped often enough that I always try it when I have that same issue.

I have the RCBS collet puller, along with several impact pullers. The impact style puller works great for when the bullet is seated too deep for the collet to grab. The only problem with it is some rounds won't fit in the opening where the round sits. Any WSM, 28 Nosler, 338 Lapua or fat case won't fit in the opening. And the impact style works best with heavy bullets, since it uses inertia. If you were trying to pull a 40 grain bullet from a 223 Rem round, you may be there a while.

I have several of these: https://www.frankfordarsenal.com/quick-n-ez-bullet-puller/836017.html

Grip-n-pull are handy. THe old Keneti pullers that look like hammer work and I have never damaged a bullet with one.

Like Dstroud said for loads that have been loaded a while seating the bullet just a touch more can help with the pressure needed to pull a bullet.

Some bullet shapes just do not leave much bullet shank to grab with a puller nd lend them selves more to the kenetic pullers

Thanks for all the feedback. I went ahead and ordered the franford arsenal hammer from amazon as it was the cheapest.

I tried seating the bullet a bit further and then pulling. It worked better but still left a noticeable ring. The impact hammer seemed archaic and dangerous back when I bought the bullet puller I currently own. You and live and you learn, I suppose.

Those little collets they put with the kinetic (hammer) pullers work but so do shell holders for the press and the shell holders are to me easier to use.

Either will have the primer open so nothing can hit it.
