So my buddy and I grabbed a couple landowner tags for a bull elk in Unit 45 in October. This will be both our first time on a DIY elk hunt. Plan is to camp at the truck and walk in a couple miles everyday. What would everyone recommend taking as necessities for the hunt? I'm talking recommended backpacks, tools, etc...to make our trip all the better and easier for us.
I don't expect an easy time of it and chance of success is low but this is more for the experience than the kill. Thanks for the replies.

Hope the New Mexico travel restrictions are changed before the season starts!

I’ve killed a bull in that unit and missed a stud during archery. I love that unit
What you need really depends on if this is going to be an ongoing endeavor. If it is then there are a few pieces I’d spend more money on like pack and boots.
My system is same from Aug to Nov only difference is base layer weight gets heavier and my mid layer fleece may get heavier
Base layer- light wool zip off(Kuiu and firstlite makes them)... zip off is important Mid layer (pants and grid fleece pull over) Puffy jacket(water proof down) Rain jacket
Back pack wise I run Exo, but have used Kuiu and Kifaru. Mystery ranch makes a good cheaper option day pack with load haul ability called pop up. Nut shell you can’t go wrong with EXO, Kifaru, MR, Stone Glacier or Kuiu. They all make system options that can change out bag size if need be.
As far as gear, be smart, extra weight isn’t fun. Don’t go all Bear Grylls, just need fire starter, Limited basic first aid, game bags, water purification(MSR trailshot or sawyer System is hard to beat for weight), paracord, sharp knife, TP and a contractor trash bag(multi use item, from rain to ground tarp etc, that’s really it, outside of food.
Optional stuff I may or may not carry are trekking poles and gaiters,
If you have questions on 45 PM me

Oh it’s also one of the more rugged and higher elevation units in NM. I’d get real active.
