Thanks to a good friend and his family land, along with a couple of lease invites I have never really had to search for a hunting lease. I am likely going to buy in the next year, but wanting to be on a lease this season. Here's my question from what I'm coming across...large ranches are leasing "per acre." How does this work? Is it just another way of saying that the 1000 acre ranch at $10/acre is going to cost a group $10k or can I, as a solo hunter, lease 150 acres fro $1500?
Obviously, price per acre makes perfect sense when buying, but I assume no one is surveying land for a season lease.

Like Quit said, your thinking and math is correct. Would assume almost never would a survey be done for that purpose. Trust has to come in at some point. Also its pretty easy with todays technology to figure out the acreage. Once you know the total money needed for the lease then if there is a group its just a matter of deciding how to slice the pie. The 1000ac at $10 ac you mentioned costs a total of $10000 so two guys is 5000 each or 4 guys is 2500 each etc. The Rancher will normally say the maximum hunters he will allow but usually you can pay more per guys and put less guys on and thats usually the best way for the long haul
At some point in life its time to quit chasing the pot of gold and just enjoy the rainbow. FR Keep your gratitude higher than your expectations. RWH

Thanks. Pretty much what I assumed, but was hoping to be able to squeeze on to a place. If it were long term, I'd consider being a lease head and filling spots, but it's most likely just one season as I'm trying to narrow down the region I want to buy in.

It's not uncommon for leases to charge an additional amount for corn to fill feeders, camp electricity and/or water, and other shared resources. Other leases my leave these costs up the individual members who fill their own feeders and pay for their own water and electricity.

You can check acreage off of Google earth or I also use a Field Measure app on my phone that is actually fairly accurate.

Also, while most larger leases will list a $/acre which is usually $10-$25/acre, most small places like you mentioned say 150 acres you’ll see listings asking for 3 hunters $2,000/hunter, $6,000 for 150 acres, or $40/acre.
