I am looking for a used Polaris Ranger Crew (recommended by mechanic). Having never bought or have any experience with one, I have some quesitons. Looking at either a 800 or 900 model. 1. how old would you purchase? 2. # of miles? 3. # of hours? 4. model? 5. reasonable price? 6. what to look for? good? bad? 7. upgrades? 8. questions to ask seller?
I am on a budget so no 10k units. Thanks!

no help here, heard too many negatives on Rangers ... Kubota or CanAm would be my choices, just my opinion

What’s your budget? I’d look for one 100% stock. Less likely to have been abused. Polaris only has a 6 month warranty new. I’d try to find one with power steering. The 900 would be my preference. They hold value pretty well so depending on budget you may be looking at a 5-6 year old unit. Test drive it and use low and high gear and get up to speed. Belts are a common issue and you will feel it slipping. It will be very jumpy at low speed. Miles and hours don’t mean anything. Maintenance does. Love my dad to death but there’s no way I’d buy anything used from him that’s not a truck.

PMK, thanks. I have looked at both the Kubota or CanAm and they are just out of my price range.
jhenderson, thanks. Definitely power steering. Budget 8500-9000.

9k should get you a good unit. Have seen several in the 7-9k range that looked decent. Wasn’t in the market so didn’t check heavily into them but they do exist. May even be able to find one at a dealer and get a warranty for anything you may not find immediately.

I know a guy through a UTV forum in Canada, he has one, the 900 I think, He said it's been great, but it's always ridden rough, he said if you hit a hole the size of a baseball y better hang onto your hat. He runs his tires under maximum pressure limit too to attempt to cushion it some. Other than that he says the engine runs really great and hauls stuff like no ones business.

Some obvious checks.
Oil Air Filter - see if the box has water, dirt, or mud sitting in the bottom Shock Towers - see if there's rub marks on the tower from the inner tire knobs (could indicate some previous rough riding, but not always the case depending on tire size)
My 570 crew is smooth on rocks out west and has plenty of power for pulling full water totes on small trailers (2500 lbs or so)

Honda Pioneer is the new model of the Big Red. I am on ranger #2. Well almost 3.... Kiddo had one of the small kiddo models and it was great for her. My first Ranger was a 900 crew and I bought it used. And now I have a 1000 crew northstar. I am not easy on my stuff and tend to push them a little hard sometimes.... That being said I have had zero issues with either one!!! The first one got maintained when it should have or close to it and the only thing that broke was a CV boot and replaced the complete axle. The Northstar is now I think 2 years old and I use it daily to feed cattle among other things. I am in a pasture at least 2-3 days a week in it checking fence and chasing cows... I have NO issues at all with it!!! Just my experiences. Thanks TGT
I have a little bitty one. Think that will do?

Thanks all for your comments. And if anyone happens to see a 900 for sale in my budget, let me know.
