I was wondering what the consensus is on staining a cedar fence. Let it age/color naturally or stain it every year?

I stained mine. Can't stand an old grey half rotted fence

We put in a board on board cedar fence with top cap when we bought our house in 2016. Never stained it and it looks very dull and gray. Not really a fan and need to get around to staining it. Just can't seem to find the damn time.

I prefer the look of stain and it helps with longevity also.

Stain/seal it. It'll last longer.

Go fast, easy, and cheap:

Thompsons Waterseal applied with a pump-up plastic tank sprayer like you would use for insecticide. No, it will not last as long as a hand brushed stain with a high quality product, but you may be amazed at fast it goes on.

You can put just a clear sealer on it.

Negative. It will waterproof it but will still turn grey.

He needs to pressure wash it and possibly use a brightener then apply a good quality stain and seal. Penofin was mentioned and is an excellent product. For fences I like Olympic maximum in a cedar semi-transparent or a CWF flood in semi trans. I hate behr products but their solid color stain ( looks like paint) is a good product as well. Stay away from the semi-trans stain.

Thompson’s water seal isn’t worth the containers they come in.

Before I got into real estate I owned a paint & coatings company that specialized in wood coatings. Did thousands of fences, decks and arbors

Rough sawn cedar fences are terrible to brush or roll, you can use a pump sprayer but I would rent an airless and apply with that, then brush out any drips or runs

I have pressure washed and restrained mine 5 times in 20 years.

I wait for a hailstorm and point it out to insurance. Hail will ding up the stain.

That ain't no lie. The guys that built my deck used that and it literally washed off with the rain.

Which reminds me I need to stain my fence and my deck lol.

Behr makes a stain/sealer in various colors that lasts for many years. We use the redwood color. The can is in the barn, so I can’t give the actual name of the stain. It’s great stuff. It’s pretty thick, so a sprayer would have to be a good one, I suppose.

I made a bunch of cedar outdoor furniture and a treated wood picnic table. We tried all sorts of varnishes and coatings, but the Behr stuff is far and away the best. Remind me tomorrow to go read the can for the full description.

if you are gonna spray it, I would also recommend a 2 coat system. You can get by with a good first coat but that rough sawn really soaks up stain.

I hate the fuzz that a power sprayer puts on cedar. I use a sprayer with a 50/50 bleach and water mix...I start at 25/75 and see the result on a panel before I go 50/50, if it isn't bad it'll work great. Spray it all off with water to make sure all the bleach is gone then use an oil based stain that I also spray on. This is the best stuff I've found and it's in Plano.

That's good info to know.

What would you recommend for a boat dock, pressure treated wood? This product we use currently doesn't seem to work well, and we need a cedar color.

Ok, here’s the data on the Behr coating.

Behr Deck Plus
Solid Color waterproofing wood stain.

5 yr guarantee on decks and 15 yrs on fences and siding. I’ve used it on cedar and treated wood.

This is the only outdoor paint or stain we have ever used that lasted for years.

I can assure you that you’ll get 5 years and more on outside cedar furniture or fences. As for cedar coloring, check the website for the bazillion colors they have. They call it a stain, but you can’t see through it. Might as well call it paint. But, the stuff lasts forever. Our first use was on a picnic table. We repainted with the Behr after about 10 years, but only because the wife wanted it prettier for company. Recently I used it for a bunch of benches I made for the high school tennis courts. It’s 3 years later and no flaking, peeling, or fading.

Yep! You can call it stain, but it’s essentially a paint. But, would that matter on a fence?

Till this stuff, nothing lasted that showed wood grain. Finally we just gave up on seeing wood grain.
