Not a turtle but——-Sulcata Tortoise Lifespan – the Sulcata tortoise can live anywhere from 50 all the way up to 150 years old. Make sure the tortoise is in the estate/will planning.

Big words.

I pick up box turtles multiple times a year.
I also pick up many red ear sliders but probably not what you want.

I think a red rated slider is what I last had.

There is a Facebook page called The Adventures of Hercules. Pretty cool critter.

And I read recently that Box turtles suffer from anxiety when removed from their home turf.

From Wikipedia

Box turtles as pets[edit]
Most turtle and tortoise societies recommend against box turtles as pets for small children.[15] Box turtles are easily stressed by over-handling and require more care than is generally thought. Box turtles get stressed when moved into new surroundings. Some specimens will wander aimlessly until they die trying to find their original home if they are removed from the exact area that they grew up in.[16] Three-toed box turtles are often considered the best ones to keep as pets since they are hardy and seem to suffer less from being moved into a new environment.

They are supposedly better off if yiu leave them alone. Otherwise they are always moving trynig to get back home. Google.it up.

That being said I'vd been watching for a box turtle for my backyard. Kids would dig it.

I heard that very thing, today, along with a first hand account to back it up.

My wife has a freaken Box Turtle and Tortoise zoo in my back yard. I'm the turtle pen design and landscaper. They live very happy lives, hand fed, and come to my wife when called. Most of ours are captive bred and we did recently have to find a home for a very fertile female that kept laying eggs that kept hatching. Sorry she is already gone. I can ask my wife is she wants to part with one of the hybrid babies which are various sizes now, bigger now than the newly hatched one pictured. It would require you to build an enclosure as they are too small to be able to stay in a yard. They are escape artists too. I have chicken wire buried all the way around the edge of the pen. But honestly I doubt she is willing to part with one right now. We have had the adults several years and yours should have outlived you unless it was very old to begin with.

What area do you live in? I have a turtle trap at my place that should be full, last trip there were 42 in it. Let me know what size you want.

Better off crossing a road? I'll take my chances, hopefully I don't completely wipe out the species. rolleyes

I had a pond man out to my house to discuss stocking it. There were already native turtles in there. He said that turtles were the buzzards of the sea.

My grandfather as a young man during hard times in western oklahoma had caught and eaten snapping and softshell turtles found while noodling the washita river in the area where Foss reservoir is now. Several years ago while my grandfather was still alive, I went out with the intent of catching a large snapping turtle to eat. With my grandfather's direction, I butchered it and made a turtle gumbo out of it. It was very good. They have a white and dark meat just like a chicken.

I just heard that they will constantly try to get back to the area they were born in. I didn’t say anything about wiping the species out or anything else to get butt hurt over.

I usually have turtles in yard every spring but none this year. My GWP normally finds them first and chews on the edges of their shells.

My dad liked to talk about catching soft shelled turtles when he was younger and how good they tasted. One year he popped one opening weekend of dove season, cleaned it, and mom chicken fried the pieces with everything else she was cooking. I was looking forward to it. Ended up tasting about like you'd expect turtle to taste - not very good. Don't think I'll ever try it again.

Used to catch snapping turtles and soft shelled turtles as a kid roaming the bayous of Houston. Would turn them out in the backyard. Soft shell turtles don’t do well during a hard freeze out of water.
