A couple of weeks ago a big shallow hole appeared overnight in the side yard out here in the country. Washtub size and about a foot deep. The wife and I examined it, wondered what could have done it and why. No tracks that I could find. We couldn’t come up with much, so we filled in the hole. Today I was over that way and there was a small hole where the big hole had been. Too big for a snake and too small for an armadillo, but about the right size for maybe a skunk. That made me think that the digger of the big hole had been digging after the owner of the small hole, and had blocked off the little hole in the process. I ran a water hose in the hole for a long time, but could not fill it up.

I’m gonna put a game camera on that hole. I have to know....

But I’m open to ideas in the meantime.

Was the dirt that came from the hole built up around the edges?
Doesn’t sound like it, sadly I think you got some sinkhole action! confused2

Your house might be next. Then can run cave tours.

You should have taken a pic before ruining the crime scene.

Was there a mound of dirt around the big hole like something had dug it up?

I say it was a pirates treasure chest that rotted and collapsed. Also sounds like someone else also knows your secret. Better be careful or you will have that guy from Oak Island digging around in your yard.

When using the hose to fill the hole, be ready with a weapon.

603, rickym might be right. If it doesnt look like something was dug out than the only other thing is it sunk in. You might want to consider a civil engineer

I'm still saying armadillo. Had them around the house. Took forever to. Flood them out.

I didn't quote the above post. You might want to edit it.

Yup, when flushing critters you need to be ready to defend yourself

It wasn’t a sink hole. Something dug the dirt out. We shoveled the dirt back in. And then that small hole showed up. It’s about the diameter of a beer can. Much too small for an armadillo. I’ll try to remember to put a camera on it.
