Was hauling a dump trailer (dual tandem) and hung it up on a roll off dumpster. Tried backing it off and smoked my reverse. This will be #3 once i replace it. Does anyone have any suggestions.

What year/trans? They don’t call them slush boxes for nothing.
If not failing from abuse or neglect I’d buy a built one.

I will probably catch hell for this but it won't be the first time. If this was the third one it is kinda like being married 3 times. Sometimes a person has to look in the mirror to see where the problem is.

If it's a 68 call revmax or Randy's and get good tcm tuning. If it's a 48 call firepunk or suncoast. If it's an Aisin, you're screwed

Yes I know don’t hit dumpsters. But they are telling me it was due to my tune and a stock trans will not hold up. I am looking at putting in a built trans but it is around $10,000 and stock is minimum 6. It is the 68RFE

I’d check around some more on pricing. Tuned on a stock 68rfe is bad stuff waiting to happen. My cousin had his done a few years ago for 5,000 or less for a built one he’s over 100k on it now and it’s solid.
He had his installed at a diesel shop in schertz, the shop outsources their trans work to kosub transmission on hay 87 between San Antonio and lavernia, might be worth a try but may be too far also.

My truck has been tuned for over 45,000 miles with a 100hp towing tune. Never had an issue out of it and I routinely drive 80-85 with a trailer. I don’t tow every day, but at least weekly there is something behind it. Truck has 141,xxx miles currently

Some folks are lucky. He made it not quite 10k miles and his gave. The OP has lost three. I’m betting your in a small minority that has good luck with a stock trans with that kind of added power.

I drove a tuned 5.9 Cummins with the 48RE for 12 years and 200k and it never gave me a lick of trouble... because I knew how to drive it and what the limit was.
I ride with don k. You pay to play. It doesn't matter who manufactured the truck, if you tune your diesel engine without giving the tranny any love, and the tranny goes out, it is solely the driver's fault. If my 48RE would have gone out, it would have been my fault.
To be fair, every manufacturer has produced some garbage transmissions, as well as some outstanding transmissions. I'm not a brand-loyal fanboy and currently drive an F250, but I firmly believe the Dodge tranny reputation is largely overblown.
Here are your options if you want to stop smoking your transmissions:
1. Change the way you drive and replace your transmission with a stock 68.
2. Return your engine to stock and replace your transmission with a stock 68.
3. Keep your engine tuned and properly build a 68RFE designed to handle the additional power. With what I assume you've already put into replacement transmissions, you likely could have already installed a bulletproof 68RFE and been done with it for many tens of thousands of happy, trouble-free miles.

I haul with in the limits of the truck. I have had an 04,07,2012 and this 2013 ram 2500’s all tuned too the lowest setting and never lost a transmission. I drive the speed limit and don’t “roll coal”. I have deleted and tuned many dodges and ford’s. And this and one of my 6.0 power strokes are the only one’s that gave me issues. The 6.0 was an injector. I drive like a grandpa according to friends and family. I take care of all my equipment and vehicles. It is a truck so it does get worked and I am pretty sure the death punch was hanging it up on the roll off and trying to back it off.

having owned (within our family) 9 Cummins over the last 29 years, my current truck ('09 2500 Crew 4x4 long bed automatic) finally lost a transmission (second one out of the 9, daughters '05 but I don't think it needed replacement, but that's another story) at about 155k miles where it wouldn't shift out of 2nd gear. My local mechanic did a full replacement using a Heavy Duty Jasper remanufactured installed for $5400, came with a 3 year/36k mile warranty.

This is the most love I’ve ever heard for a 48 re or 68rfe. They definitely don’t have a reputation of being robust transmissions.

This is the most love I’ve ever heard for a 48 re or 68rfe. They definitely don’t have a reputation of being robust transmissions. In stock form motor-wise, they are just fine. Any, and i mean ANY added power, they need to be beefed up or it's going to get burnt up. Same with dodge/ram standard transmission. Anything over stock power, a better clutch needs to be put in it because it'll get roasted real quick. The 2005.5 and newer G-56 trucks got detuned from the factory so they wouldn't smoke the stock clutch. Look at power ratings on the auto vs. g-56. The g-56 has less power from the factory than their autos. While on one hand, i dont disagree with what you're saying but on the other hand, dodge/ram designed those trannies for bare minimum power. Put a chip/programmer in it, it voids warranties and more money in their pockets to replace it/work on it, them assuming you'll bring it back to them to get the tranny replaced/fixed. Unfortunately its a double edged sword. Biggest reason i keep sticking with the standard transmissions on my trucks is because a better clutch is a lot cheaper than a built auto. I have been told tranny tuning has supposedly come a long ways somewhat recently though.

There is no tuning for a 48, it all hard parts. For under 8k it will hold over 1000hp. The 68 on the hand is tunable and increasing line pressure is beneficial even for a stock trans. The cost and unreliability of the 68 leads most people to swap to a 48re or ford 4r100.
