While I'm waiting on some new rifles to hit the shelves, I was thinking about buying a AAA+ Stock blank and a barreled action. going this direction. I think stock makers use a lathe method with a "template" stock of my choice of designs to make the stock.

Of course it would have to be inletted, bedded, sanded smooth and hand finished with LOTS of oil layers.

Anyone know any builders who still do fancy wood stocks?

Against the grain stocks. Not sure he has a webpage but is on Facebook.

I bought an Accurate Innovations stock for a rifle once and it was great. He has rifle blanks to choose from.

These options will blow your +/- $2000 budget unless you are stocking a Savage Axis or Ruger American. laugh

Not necessarily, if you start with a used rifle or one you already have. If you are trying to keep it inside $2k and you have a proven shooter that you'd like to put in a nice wood stock, then why not?

Another worth looking at is this guy on youtube:

I'm not sure what exactly you are looking for but there are a lot of Winchester Supergrade with AAA French walnut on GB right now. Many have actually pictures and the wood looks really stellar. Some really nice ones in 6.5 Creedmoor. There are also some gorgeous 70 Supers in maple with pics.

Buzz, get a nice stock that has been inletted and do the finish work (final shaping/sanding, stain and oil finish) yourself. It’s a fun project you certainly have time for and you will be much more proud of it than just buying one. And it’s quite easy! Find an old ‘beater’ to practice on if you want. Fajen used to offer this. I bought a ‘decent but not great’ grade ($10 at the time) for a model 12 forearm and it came out great...has been living on my 16 ga. for almost 20 years now.

Historically stock makers march to a beat of their own drum...I know you don't have the patience to deal with them. Just keep looking and enjoy the ride digging through ads looking for wood that makes your pace maker beep at ya lol35
