I have always had Brittanys - and always had 2. Never had any issues with them fighting. When my last one died, I got a Chesapeake instead. He is the most gentle dog I have ever seen. So now I have a male Brit (50 pounds - 3 yo) and a male Chessie (75 pounds - 18 mo) kenneled together. Every now and then the Brit bumps the Chessie with his chest - seemingly to show superiority. The Chessie goes along with it. Sometimes he just sticks his head in his house to get away from the alpha dog attempts. But they both love their food. When I feed them, the Chessie does not back down if the Brit comes near the food, and vice versa. And they know which dish is theirs - they just don't always stick to it, especially if they finish first. They have caused a little damage to each other fighting. Not bad, but still it bothers me. I like them to be together (why I have always had 2 dogs and always kept them together), but any help other than just keeping them separate? I'm hoping someone out there has experience with this.

Maybe a bark collar for when you aren't there? most of the time when they are fighting they are barking so it might work.

Sometimes can escalate it.

They both want to be dominant,, the fighting will continue until one of them relents.

It is probably past the point if no return. What you should have done on day 1 , the first hint of aggression is show that brittney they YOU are the alpha not him. As soon as the Britney shows a sign like hair standing up on his neck or showing his teeth YOU grab him by the collar swing him away and pin him down. Hold him down for a minute . I don’t mean to beat up on the dog by all means. Give him a what for.

If it were me I would do this ASAP. Don’t leave the dogs together alone until you can be sure this won’t happen again. Keep your attention at all times on them and be right next to them to catch it before it starts. Like I mentioned it may be too late but hopefully not. Everytime they are together keep your attention on them and be ready to show your dominance right now. Not after there fighting already. Read that brits body language. If he is heading to the Chessie in a aggressive manner to bump him be right on top of this Timing is everything . Hopefully you can see the Brit back off and slowly you can give them a little more freedom together

Chessies are very headstrong, I think the brit will have to learn it's place or they will keep at it til one is hurt or backs down. Like some said, try disciplining the brit.

Yeah now that I think about it, that method might not be best. I have never doubled up except in the mule while hunting. Have never had more than a growl or two with any of mine in over 30 years of owning bird dogs. Had a little fight with another guys dog and two of ours many years ago but that's it. I've owned a couple GSP's, 3 EP's and many Brittanies. Just throwing out suggestions

Very serious problem. That Brit will keep trying to dominate the Chessie and if you aren't careful the Chessie may kill him.
Chessie's are famous for not quitting once they are riled. NEVER feed those two together. Be careful around gates and doors. Don't let the dogs jocky for position at gates and doors. Don't hesitate when you see aggressiveness-- stop it immediately. Use the hose, if possible, when you see aggression. If you hear so much as a growl --put that dog on the ground or spray it with water. You have to show you are dominant.

You better separate them or you will someday have a dead Brittany. Only option is to neuter both. Putting a pair of intact males in the same pen is asking for trouble.

I would separate them. It will make life much easier. Keeping these dogs together sounds like a recipe for disaster. Kennels are cheaper than good dogs.

There was a thread just like this on another forum just a couple months ago. The owner didn’t take the fighting serious. It got more frequent. He reached in to break up the fighting and lost his thumb in the ordeal. He showed a picture of his missing thumb

I’m sure you’ve tried this. If you can’t separate put your gloves on and when the aggression starts grab each by the ear and make them wish they hadn’t started growling. I don’t know how this will work when you’re not around but they’ll listen when you’re feeding them. I don’t put up with fighting. You could always sell the Chessie and come back to all Britts.

My grandpa (step) kept rottweilers, he used a empty gallon milk jug as puppies and when they got big, all he had to do was hold up the milk jug to stop them.

This is the best/most logical answer in my opinion.

Separate Chesapeake as soon as possible.

Thanks everyone. In the middle of getting them separated permanently - redoing my kennels (custom wrought iron, so not easy). Sad thing is they play with each other and seem to love each other's company 99% of the time. But I'm going with the collective wisdom on the THF on this one.

Feed sometimes brings out the worst in dogs.
I don’t have a fighting issue, but my 4 dogs are all females. Three of them are always trying to set the pecking order, the oldest just gets out of the way. I need a pic of the latest shenanigans, one standing, one humping that one, and another humping the humper. It’s quite comical.

play is a way of establishing dominance. watch close what is going on and you will see--they may work some things out but I would not feed them together and watch them around gates and doors.

They are dogs, its what they do. Let them figure out it and stay out of the way and once its resolved, you will rarely have issues again.
