Ive been thinking about welding 2 55 gallon barrels together with short legs to build a feeder with more capacity. Anyone have one of these they have built?

Just my thoughts,, I have never done it ------- top heavy, so the legs will need to be spread out wide to keep cows from knocking it over ( if there are cows), and you will need a really tall ladder to fill it. Seems like a fun project.

If I go ahead with it I would make it short like a stand and fill type feeder. Thanks for the replies so far.

Ramball use to make a feeder varmint plate for the bottom, works way better then a cage, and makes it lower also. I’d incorporate the plate design on bottoms

Where do you find a 110 gallon drum at? That would be ideal.

You can for sure find 85 gallon drums. They're a little pricey, but will hold about 500 lbs of corn depending on your funnel angle.

Why not 2 55 gallon drums on a platform, run one in the am and one in the pm. Holds the same amount of corn and if one dies your still feeding.

That's a good idea I hadn't thought of! It'd cost twice the price to make, though.

Been running this barrel for 30+ years. I did not feel comfortable attaching two full barrels as it would be top heavy when full and dangerous to fill. I cut the rolled edge off the top of one barrel. The other barrel I cut along the top of the ridge one third of the way down the barrel giving me a 1/3 barrel top with a flared bottom edge. I heated the flared end of the 1/3 barrel with a torch to expand the metal, placed it over the full barrel, With a 2x6 board over the top of the 1/3 barrel I pounded it down onto the full barrel with a sledge hammer. Then I sealed it with some construction adhesive for good measure. I built a metal funnel to fit into the bottom and sealed it in place as well so no corn or dust could get under it. This gave me 1/3 more volume.

Note I always run two feeders at my main stands. If I know I wont be back for a long while I will run one in the morning and the other one in the evening. But the main reason is considering all the work, time, and money invested in a deer lease and stand sight, I don't want to risk a single feeder getting stopped up, damaged, etc. It really is not that much of an expense as an insurance policy considering everything else. I have seen other hunters show up and find their feeder has not been working for several weeks. Really sucks if they find it that way on opening day and that has happened to me many years ago. With my two feeders running at each stand now, I have good odds at least one of them is going to be working. I don't know how many times I have let a fellow hunter hunt one of my stands because they arrived to find their only feeder had not been running for who knows how long.

Look at it as Insurance up

This is exactly how I built mine, 2 55 gallon tanks on same base. 2 motors, 2 solar panels. Only thing I do differently is I run each feeder in the morning and each fender in the evening. This way, in the event one quits, the other is still feeding twice a day.

If you decide to weld two barrels together lower the center of gravity by attaching the legs near the top of the lower barrel. Personally I’d just get an 85 gallon drum, depending on the funnel it will hold 11-12 bags of corn.

You can take care of weevils by dumping a bottle of rubbing alcohol in on top of the corn and put the lid on.
The vapor will kill them, then evaporate pretty quickly in Texas sun.

Have you considered a used propane tank? I’m looking at a 200 gallon tank in my garage and thinking it would make a nice pair of 100 gallon feeders.
