[Linked Image] Found this guy hanging out on the hummingbird feeder.. I guess he's looking for a
little birdie snack. I usually escort these guys to the woods but this one was not so lucky. You don't mess with my hummingbirds!

Do the humming birds stay around all summer? I have considered putting up a feeder as I see them in the spring but didn't know if they stay or were just passing through. I am in Stephens county also.

my first wave will come thru late Feb. to mid March, hang around for a few week or so, then new batches move thru staying a week or two before moving on. Usually by late May, my numbers are really down as I suspect it's nesting season (around here) but the numbers usually skyrocket by early-mid July thru the mid to late September and then dwindle on down out to late Oct. Right now I am seeing 3 regularly but had 7-9 back in mid April thru mid May. Late summer my numbers vary from about 10 up to as many as 25. I put out 1 feeder until I have 3, add another feeder until I get 6, add another feeder and so on ... late summer I will have 6-7 feeders, filling each every day to two, about 3-4 gallons of nectar per week (4/1 plain sugar to water). I am in Georgetown for reference.

edit: never had a snake attack the feeders ... but do remove walking stick from around the feeders

This is actually my wife's thing. She starts feeding when the warm weather starts and stops when it starts getting cold. There is a local population that hangs around all summer but head out when it starts getting cold, So, I would say they do migrate. There must be a healthy population because they can empty that feeder in one day.

How the hell does a snake get up there? Amazing where those things can get themselves.

My friend in Leakey sent me a pic just like that. Rat snake coiled around porch post waiting for hummers. I've seen those snakes hit a tree and go straight up in the branches. Weirdest though was one crawling up our brick wall. Unreal.

Yup
He'd have received the same ticket to hell at my house to....and likely by my wife as she loves her hummingbirds as well.

High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

Gotta wonder if the snake was thirsty. I have a woodpecker that feeds at mine quite a bit.

The ones around here in Goliad County start migrating in March and the largest number(20-30 at feeders) are in May during the spring. I have a few(1-3 at feeders in morning or evening) that hang around all summer but most move north from here. In the late summer at the end of August they start migrating back south. Largest numbers(50-100 at same time around feeders) are in mid Sept for about a week as they move down towards Rockport area from here.

House Finches are at mine this year. They have been nesting under the roof on the front porch for years but this is the first time that I have seen them drinking from the Hummingbird feeders. They started back at the end of May.

While I applaud his agility, I simply cannot imagine one of them actually catching a freaking hummingbird. Those birds are ridiculous fast, not to mention they could see that snake from a mile away.
