Help!! I’m thinking about taking my family (Kids 4 & 8) to the Mountains in late July. I’ll be wanting to feel some cooler weather by then and will want some light hiking and outdoors type stuff to do. Was thinking about renting a cabin in those areas... Anyone have a favorite place In that area? Favorite restaurant? Cabin location? This would be my first time there so just looking for some input. Southern CO isn’t out of the question either... Thanks!

Might want to check if the area is open or closed. Lincoln National Forest at Ruidoso is currently closed.

The ski slopes in AF open for mountain biking in the summer, but the chair lifts may be a little much for the littles. There is some good fishing in the Cimmaron Canyon between Cimmaron and Eagle Nest. There is a fish hatchery in Questa that the kids may enjoy. Take a trip out to the Rio Grande Gorge bridge while you are there. Amazing site to see. There is also a couple of fishing ponds in Red River, one of them just for kids.

The elk come down from the mountains and frequent the golf course in Angel Fire in the morning and evenings. Pretty cool to see them up close.

Also, there is a place in Eagle Nest that rents boats. Pretty good fishing on the big lake there if you know what to use.

Check out Eagle Nest. Plenty to do within a 30 minute drive in the Enchanted Circle!

Red River and it's open. We usually get something off VRBO.

Red River has more to do, but you can drive around the whole area pretty easy.

We go up there at least once a year. My family has a little old condo in Angle Fire, so we stay there. None of the towns have more than a day or two worth of things to do. You can only visit so many shops that have all of the same stuff. We will go to Taos for a day, Red River for a day. Santa Fe is a couple hour drive.

Downtown Taos has some cool shops. If you like camping, they have an outdoors store downtown. Also, Kit Carsons house is pretty cool. There is a shop headed north out of town called Camino Real Imports. They have some good stuff.

There is another shop in Red River that had some good stuff, not the typical t-shirt shop. I cant find the name but it was on the east side of town, south side of the road. It looks like it used to be the old post office. They still had a bunch of the old brass PO Boxes in there.

As mentioned before, the Rio Grand Gorge Bridge. There is also another bridge that is cool, and you can get right down to the river. John Dunn Bridge is the name.
