When I was about 10 or 11, my uncle lived in Kenedy, TX in Karnes County and my brother and I used to catch a bunch of Horned Toads of all sizes when we visited him. I did see some very dark ones like that one but most were lighter colored. This was in the mid 1960's though. I did recently read an article on efforts to reintroduce hatchlings back into the Texas landscape by the dozens and it happened to call Kenedy, TX the Horny Toad capital of TX so I guess that's why we found so many in those days.

Found the magazine article and it is TCU working on breeding and releasing the baby toads. The scientists have two areas in Blanco county that fit the criteria of proper food, few fire ants and at least 250 acres. The habitat they prefer benefits quail, turkey and other birds.
