anyone know of any duck calling classes offered around DFW? my son and I would to sound more like ducks! lol

Good question. I grew up calling ducks in flooded timber in Arkansas. I learned by listening to the ducks. Videos were not avaible back int the day. You might start with a video.

I learned from just watching online stuff and then practicing a ton.

It just takes a lot of practice.

I am a member of the online calling academy that I posted but I haven't used it much.

Actually the easiest call to learn is the pintail whistle. The only ducks who quack, is the mallard and the mottle duck. The mottle duck is normally only seen in the marsh and in pairs and rarely quacks.

The rest of the ducks whistle.

And blue wings, they laugh at you.

And also many ducks will still respond to a mallard duck call even if they don't quack.

I can turn a group of spoonies in like nobody's business!! Lol

Just to be clear, I have called in many ducks over the years. I wouldn't say I am good at it, but I have turned them and shot them. My 13 year old son wants to be good at it and while we have watched tons of videos on the subject we thought taking a class together would be fun and something cool to do in the off-season.

That is a good way to spend time with your son. I don’t know of any classes but if you have a bass pro nearby they run seminars and such on all kinds of topics. Maybe they offer one on calling

There is some fake news here. Sure, when you hear quacking it is mostly mallard hens. But there are lots of others that do the same, although they sound a bit different. I hear spoonie hens a lot - they sound like BWT. Wigeon and pintail do, too, but you don't hear them as often.

Anyhoo, good luck with finding a class. Seems like a great family thing to do. I agree the best thing to do is start with videos. Once you get the hang of getting the air from your diaphragm and not your throat it starts to fall in place. Learn that before any class and you'll get a lot more out of it.

As stated above, look at the You Tube, they have some good ones that will get you started. The key is practice, until you drive everyone crazy with the noise.

Something that in my opinion is more important than perfect calling is knowing when to call. Such as not calling when they're overhead and knowing when to turn them downwind.

Gadwalls also quack. Some manufactures make calls for these ducks.

I too learned the ropes in Arkansas. We'd stay a little after the hunt and just listen to the birds on the water, birds working and how they talk. The goal is to get birds in. Sounding like a duck helps a lot but understanding when to call is just as critical IMO.
