If you haven’t done it already its that time of year to clean the coils on your AC unit. Stupid easy and makes a real difference in how well it operates. Make sure you do it with unit running and get as close as possible to the coils with a concentrated spray. up

Do watch the psi, you do not want to bend the coils.

Little too late for me. I had to call the man.

I have a window unit in my wood shop, and like earlier units, it accumulated a lot of dust and moisture. The cooling was really reduced. In the past I’d just get a new window unit every 3 years or so, but I decided to try to clean this one. I bought a specialty spray foam that I think someone on the forum recommended, read the directions and used the stuff. It worked great and I didn’t even have to pull the unit out of the window.

As for the big A/C on the main house, I have it serviced and cleaned every spring.

Yes indeed, Bill! As I’ve told my wife, somebody on the forum has dealt with just about anything and everything we can think of. I would much rather get info from long term trusted forum folk than I would some anonymous internet person.

There’s a lot of knowledge here.

Texas Dan recommended cleaning out the drain and pouring Clorox in there. That was included with my service call. He had to go up into the attic. Haven't been up there in years. Mud dauber nest fell out.

If the 2nd amendment was written just to include guns for hunting, why is there not an amendment to protect fishing poles?

Air filters replaced, and bleach down the drains once a month in the central units - full cleaning of inside & outside units every six months (pull blower from air handler and clean/wash the coils good with a water hose on the condenser unit outside & spray with Corrosion X). Makes a huge difference in efficiency and life of the units. On the window unit, it gets pulled out & washed/sprayed with Corrosion X twice a year also. Just did all of mine. up

To be honest, I got the reminder from a buddy who was helping a mutual friend get his AC back online. His primary unit was covered in vines and had a 5 ft tree growing up the back side of it and had no idea why it wouldn't cool anymore. roflmao (5000 sq foot house with 3 AC's). Some people got more $$ than sense.

You can extend the efficiency, life and decrease the maintenance of your window AC units by covering the air inlets on sides and top with window screen tied on with two tie wraps on each side near bottom - don't cover the back fins as that is exhaust.
Most of the crud that grows in there and plugs the coils is from leaves, dead bugs, dirt daubers, etc.
When a bug flies in there, they usually get chopped up by the fan and start growing mold and mildew, etc. in the condensed water puddle.
As leaves and twigs fall in, they plug the drain and make unit hold more water.

That's a good tip. I need to do that for my unit at the lease.

Bleach should of been applied when it wasn't A/C Season, now it will get diluted heavily.

Drop a few chlorine tablets into the P-trap in the condensate drain line. Slow, continuous treatment to avoid plugging.
