Alright you cretons - Which movie is this the opening to? I'm pretty sure the tempo is a little faster in the movie, so don't let that throw you. I tried to find the same recording that's in the movie. Hint: The opening line of the book is "I had a farm in..." Although I hate clarinets with a purple passion, this clarinet doesn't suck. The wife watched it before she was married to me, apparently with low-sperm-count, fell asleep, and has refused to watch it with me...for 28 years! I realize it's slow, but it's still incredible. 'Watch it at least once a year. Yeah, I have the DVD. A time forever lost. What I'd give to have been born then (and the means to be there).

Out of Africa. "I had a farm in Africa, at the foot of the Ngong hills..." What does the cretin win? Mark

After dealing with an "interested" lioness...
Finch-Hatton: "Doesn't that outfit come with a rifle?"
Karen: "Yes. It's...it's on my saddle."
Finch-Hatton: "Better keep it with you. Your horse isn't much of a shot..."

Well, since you were so quick and... you subtly, and without fanfare, corrected my misspelling of cretin - I can offer you a tanned eland tail, at least I think it's eland, it's been hanging in my closet so long, I can't remember. One could make a fly whisk out of it, or, if you insist, I do have a tanned cape buffalo's scrotum that I'm not doing anything with presently and I'd be glad to ship. PM me your address.

Bless you for such a generous offer...but I've an eland backskin (with tail) of my own that I haven't figure out what to do with...and it's been 18 years!
Out of Africa (both the book and the movie) are wonderful. I've poured a positively obscene Glenlivet and am starting the movie again as I type!

Mark 'Gotta 1st edition of the book that I've tried to tell the kids not to sell in a garage sale for 25 cents.

If you’re a fan of the book, you should strongly consider reading “West with the Night”. It’s the same story from the perspective of the other woman. It will probably alter your opinion of Bror von Blixen.

It will probably alter your opinion of Bror von Blixen. "West with the Night" (by Beryl Markham) is another absolute favorite of mine. My personal theory is that in the film version of OoA, the character of Felicity Spurwell is based on Beryl Markham. Born in Kenya, she became a professional horse trainer, was taught to fly by Tom Black (an early Kenya aviator), and later still did aerial hunting reconnaissance for Blix. Her most notable achievement, of course, was being first to fly across the Atlantic east-to-west. And Blix was a helluva hunter...as well as raconteur and ladies man. Some believe that Robert Wilson (Hemingway's PH character in "The Short Happy Life of Francis McComber") is loosely based on Bror.

Escanaba in the Moonlight is a good flick highlighting some of the northern deer hunting cultural experience
