I just ordered a new stock from MC3 for my Remington 700 and I plan on painting it. I'm looking for tips from those of you that have done it before. I expect it to get scratched up in the field but I'd at least like to try to do the job right so that it doesn't look like crap after one season. My thoughts were to use acetone to remove any oils from the stock and then paint with at least two coats. I'd like to seal it or clear coat it for an extra layer of protection but I don't want it to shine. Looking for input - don't be afraid to tell me my plan sucks.

Many thanks & have a safe weekend.

Happy Memorial Day to those of you who have served.

The biggest thing is getting it clean before you paint. I used a sandable primer on mine, but I made several modifications that had to be covered up. I don’t know if a primer is needed for the paint to adhere. I used a textured paint that left a rough feel, then I hit it with very fine sand paper and it came out perfect.

Clean with acetone, use a self etching primer, then a few goats if desired paint, followed by a few coats of a flat clear coat.

Thinner coats are better than thick coats. Use a quality spray paint as they will have better tips and coat more evenly.

Thanks, BigPig. I guess I should have clarified that this is a synthetic stock so I don't expect to have to do any sanding. I did not know there was such a thing as flat clear coat. Please keep the ideas coming. Recommendations on spray paint brands?

Just did one with rustoleum camo in the FDE/coyote tan color this week. I wiped it down real good with acetone and then sprayed it. We’ll see how it holds up. It was just a factory 700 stock so no great loss if it chips.

Good prep plan to get it clean.

Rustoleum is good paint, as long as the nozzle keeps giving you paint.

Krylon with the little hinge tip is the reliable one.

Once you like it, cover it with 3 coats of flat finish clear coat. That will keep the colors as you left them.

I've done a few that turned out great. Hunted hard for a few years with the Tikka shown in the pic's and it's held up well. On Plastic:
Light sand, damp sponge, let it dry thoroughly. Mask it well. Dedicate a weekend. A thin coat of base color. Plan on total coverage after the third coat with no less than 4 hours between coats. Let it cure overnight after the last coat. Practice with the webbing paint on a board. Hit the stock with one sweeping pass. Don't touch it for a day or so. The clear coat is optional. I've used it, and passed on it. I personally like the look and textured feel without it. If you let the paint cure an adequate amount of time I don't think it's necessary. [Linked Image]

Here is one I just did a couple weeks ago. Removed the butt pad and action, then Lightly sanded the whole stock and cleaned with acetone. I then taped off the barrel and action areas of the stock as I didn’t want any paint on the inletting areas. Used a black bonding primer for the base coat, then sponged on the green and tan. Like mentioned above, practice your technique on some cardboard. Once I found the pattern I liked from the sponge, I applied the green first. Let it sit for about an hour and found another pattern I liked with the sponge and applied the tan. The stock sat overnight before applying 3 coats of finish

Nice! Is primer suggested even if first wiping the stock down with acetone?

Be creative if you use a stencil to create patterns. I've used a clump of weeds, pulled strands out of a straw broom, etc. to create my patterns. Just lay them at different angles to create different looking shadows and effects. If you don't like it, you can sand it back off and start over.

this, just keep a can of the paint to touch up.

Use a real sponge, not man made sponge. Whatever color the stock already is can be your base color. Then get 2-3 other colors. Clean stock w/something good.
Spray a thin puddle on a paper plate
Dip the sponge in it
Dap the sponge on the stock in different places, in no particular locations
Let dry for how long the can says (usually 1 hour)
Do the same thing w/the next color
Rinse/repeat
Let dry 24hrs.

Key thing is use a real sponge.

rattle can paint isnt the most durable, the primer does help it stick better.
