Go to the Texas Comptrollers website. They have everything you need there.

For property taxes the county CAD. For Texas Agricultural or Timber registration to purchase certain items tax free go online to the Office Of The Comptroller of Texas.

I'll look it up. I've already registered with local CAD office. Ag/ timber exemption is what I need. Thank you!

how do you justify it IF you are not taking timber or running livestock/cutting hay???
I wonder if cutting cedar (juniper) counts towards timber if making fence posts ... hmmm

Did you see ~ What Activities Qualify?
farming or ranching for the purpose of raising agricultural products for sale; timber production (including contract logging); feedlot operation; commercial fish farm operation; bee keeping; custom harvesting; crop dusting (as defined by 14 CFR Section 137.3); growing plants for sale in a commercial nursery; a veterinary business that makes farm or ranch calls; Future Farmers of America or 4-H; or teaching an agricultural vocational course.
It is not a blanket sales tax relief deal, that if you buy property you get to use it. Lots of people acquire Ag/timber number using less than honest tactics, some get audited, some don't. I certainly wouldn't embellish and risk audit.

Rustler, I agree ... my place had an ag exemption (livestock) for decades until I moved to a wildlife improvement management exemption, which does not qualify any longer since I don't meet the criteria you listed ... but cutting cedar/juniper for fencing might qualify under the timber production area, I will need to check into that. My biggest hit was trailers where I no longer get farm tags ($5) on 5-6 trailers not to mention tax exempt on other items used on the ranch.

Shoot pigs, build brush pile, feed wildlife, etc. Pretty simple.

no, I am maintaining the wildlife improvement management exemption... that is fully in place and will remain so ... but what I am stating, you loose the ag tax exemption when you convert from normal ag to wildlife ...

You're confusing property tax, based on each counties CAD (1-D or 1-D-1) appraisal which lowers property taxes, with an actual Tx ag/timber sales tax exemption for qualifying purchases. Two completely different things. The OP & PMK are asking about acquiring a Texas agricultural and timber registration number (Ag/Timber number) for sales tax, not an Ag or wildlife valuation on property taxes.

thanks Rustler ... you stated it much better than I did ... I know that when I converted, I lost my ag tax exemption because I guess I am too honest (is that possible?) and didn't see anything listed that I could claim off the list you provided earlier. But I hadn't thought about cutting cedar for posts that might qualify under the timber portion.

I switched back from wildlife to ag usage and have cows now which increases the universe of items that qualify, but still try to make sure nothing that is non-farm related gets exemption. Worst is at tractor supply - chemicals, parts, implements, etc. are exempt items, but easy to miss that the last minute Twizzler package picked up at the register does not. Not sure they are wasting audit time on us little guys, but i would just prefer to mind my Ps & Qs in case.

About the tractor supply comment... their system automatically only discounts the products that are ag exempt. You buy. Meaning boots, etc are not tax exempt. Now if you buy a drill and don’t intend to use it at your ranch only, then well you need separate transactions.
