Not much experience with shooting coons with a shotgun. I would find the biggest lead shot i could and run with it.
Had good luck calling coons with injured bird calls... unfortunately for my buddy i shot them with his 7mm wby lol

#4 hi brass lead shot should be more than adequate.

Thanks, fellas, I appreciate it. Hard to find 3" #4's in anything that isnt a turkey load, anymore...........steel shot is killin me !! I shoot #4 Buck when I'm coyote/bobcat huntin, but I figured that #4 Buck might be a bit much for coons, & I wanted to know that I was putting more lead in the face than #4 Buck had to offer.

I like the Remington Nitro Turkey #4s myself. IME there is no difference between a 3 inch number 4 lead load, and a 3 inch number 4 lead turkey load.
#4 Buck is not too much for coons. A .460 Weatherby Magnum is not too much for coons.

#4 lead will really do the trick. Anything you hit them with is guaranteed to make them disgruntled.

I have used #5 shot since 1985. It is a good utility shot size. I have taken lots of Squirrels & a few Raccoons.

I've killed my fair share with #7.5's, but for calling them in I would go with #4,5, or 6's. I've also rolled a few with 00 while calling coyotes.

I have shot as many as 3 under my feeder at 100 yards using my Airforce .257 Condor before they realized they were dying. Shot this one last night. This racoon show up to perform some acrobatics off the feeder when he died of lead poisoning. Right between the eyes at 113 yards with a NSA 128gr Hollow Point.

3" 410 with 4s or 5s does fine. They are tough.

A well placed lead .177 pellet moving about 800 feet per second on impact will kill any raccoon. So a 12 gauge load of lead bb's and a headshot, will DRT a raccoon as far out as you can put the pattern on his head.

For that size varmints I usually stock up on high velocity lead #2 when I can find them. Got a bunch a year ago from Academy on sale.

Can't find what you want, make it. There are many buckshot and round ball molds available to the caster. Or buy bagged shot from Hornady. Too much for coons? Dead is dead. Walmart used to clearance shotgun shells after the season. Seen steel sell for a few dollars a box.

For those shells that are tougher to find in stores I've just resorted to buying them online. Yes, shipping sucks but it's better than driving store to store just to be frustrated.
