Got a new scope for my.22 Marlin, sighted it in today, it'll drive a tack. Had my older brother over helping me , he brought some CCI ammunition. I was shooting Remington thunderbolt loads. I had at least 20 duds, either no fire or the bullet would hit right or left of the target... But with the CCI loads, I was pinging the target every time.

Just thought I would share my experience smile

There’s a reason CCI costs more than all the other 22 ammo at academy.

I haven’t bought any in a good while, but I remember thunderbolts being reliable in my guns. Maybe not accurate, but reliable.

That’s about right for Thunderbolts. I even had a couple of square ended bullets in a box a few years back. Had to pry one out of the chamber with a screwdriver, as I didn’t notice it when I loaded up. My go-to these days for plinking ammo is either Mini-mags or standard velocity CCI.

I use Remington Golden HP ammo in my T1X. Certainly isn’t the absolute best accuracy, but shoots very well and is effective on Hoover Hogs, which are the toughest yard critters I have to deal with. As for the Thunderbolts, I have two bricks. Of the Thunderbolts I have shot, accuracy was not so great, but I didn’t have many duds. The OP’s issue could be the rifle itself.

The last brick of 22 ammo I bought was the Remington golden bullet 525 round or so box. They seemed ok about 10 years ago when I shot the first part of the box, but recently I started shooting them again and had many duds. I don't think I shot a single 10-shot clip through my 10/22 that didn't have a dud in it. Was given a gift of a ruger buck mark a along with two more boxes of the same ammo, I hope the newer stuff is better.

Yeah, the ammo I was shooting (thunder bolts) is no more than 3 months old, kept dry in a safe too.

Duds or not, I don’t plan to buy any more Thunderbolts. I’d sell the ones I have for a reasonable price - “reasonable” being subjective...

I thought Browning made the buckmark?

I have 4 boxes of the Remington Golden Bullet 525 round boxes that's 15-18 years old.
They are well over 25 percent duds and have same results but it's usually 2 or more in a 10 round mag.
I have 5 .22 rifles ranging from 1939 to fairly recent and it's the same in all of them.

What’s a ruger buck mark?

It must be a BrownRuger hybrid that sprang from keeping a Browning Buck Mark and a Ruger Mk III in a dark safe or closet for too long. Stuff happens in the dark.

The last bit of Remington .22LR I bought I couldn't shoot. They were 7 or 8 years old, but the slug has swelled to where they wouldn't even load in my Single Six. I've been a CCI man for a long while now.

Remington .22lr ammo is the worst I've ever tried. This story is not only not surprising, but expected.

I’ve bought Remington .22 ammo before, but only when I had to.

I have cycling issues with most of the bulk packaged ammo. In my very old Marlin Model 60 it was 1-2 ftf or jammed empties per tube. Like all above have stated CCI is no problem and accuracy greatly improved. That's all I shoot but I'm not burning through bricks of it like I did when I was a kid shooting bricks of ammo through a 10-22. I saved some of the Remington for my Grand Son to shoot in his Savage Rascal, thinking a single shot can shoot anything........wrong, still some duds. I thought all along the bulk ammo was getting the action dirty and causing the problem. Not only does dirt stick to it, some of it just doesn't go bang every time.

Another fan of CCI Standard Velocity, Mini Mag and Federal Automatch. I traded 5,000 rounds of Winchester WB/Remington/federal bulk packs for 2500 Mini Mags, and I feel like I got the better deal.

I've found CCI Velocitors have performed the best for me. CCI Stingers scatter worst than cheap ammo in my Remington. Not sure but could be something about about such a light bullet (32 grain) atop a LR casing as compared the much more accurate 40 grain Velocitors.

It’s an interesting discussion. Fact is, I just have not had any ftf issues with Rem Golden HPs in any of our 22 rifles or pistols. Only the Thunderbolts have enough duds to mention.

For a number of years I have had a 9422 over the door in my barn workshop. On a shelf next to it I have a 525 bullet box, and it has been there for years. Over time, when the box got low on ammo, I’d just pour some ammo from another box into it. I had CCI, Federal, Aquila, Winchester, and Remington mixed in the box. When the rifle got low on ammo, I’d just fill it with the random mixed ammo. You could tell by the sound of the shot that the ammo wasn’t all the same. When I got the Tikka T1x, I shot targets with ammo from that box, and found that one HP brand shot best, and I needed HP ammo for yard critters. For some reason, I had assumed that the good shooting HP ammo was Federal. I dumped the box and picked out that ammo, and happened to look on the base. It was Remington Goldens. Like I mentioned earlier, I have some CCI ammo that shoots a bit better, but it isn’t HP ammo. I have a newer box of Goldens, but haven’t tested to see if the accuracy is as good as the lot I’ve been using. I’d have considered switching to CCI std, but it’s all RN ammo (I could be wrong on that). Bottom line, the Golden HPs are the most accurate HP ammo I have, and HP ammo is what I need.

I remain open for suggestions on a more accurate inexpensive HP ammo.

My 10/22 will shoot any ammo, some more accurate than others for sure. It sure loves CCI. Now my Tikka Buckmark? That thing is finicky... roflmao

Ive had bad experiences with Remington 22 ammo. I won’t buy it again. You can’t count on it.

I once drank muddy water out of a hoof print and was dang glad to get it.

Was about to shoot at a critter over the weekend with a golden bullet and it was a dud.
