The new place I have has really sandy soil. I’m looking for something to plant but do not have a tractor to disc. What would y’all recommend? The first thought I had was watermelon when I saw how sandy 😂

our place is the same. We plant clover, Austrian winter pees and rye or wheat in mid September with rain in the forecast. good results from all and the deer liked it.

Does any of it ever come back the next year?

years ago before we had access to a tractor with a disk, we used to watch for a fall cool wet front ... a few days before the front, we would soak oats in a 5 gallon bucket, then broadcast by hand on top of the soil. If the rains came thru as planned (and not too heavy) we would get a good stand of oats. The soaking made the oats swell and start the germination process. It all depends on rain from the time you put out the seeds. Also birds ... they will eat all the seeds if you don't get them started pretty quickly. I watched a flock/herd/gaggle (whatever you call a bunch of them) turkey wipe out a complete field that I sowed on top of the ground by hand ... fowl vacuum cleaners when it came to seeds.

I planted Red Ripper Cow peas last year, or tried to. Dang Hogs came in and sucked every pea out of the ground. I came back with some throw and grow which is mainly rye grass. I got some rain and had lot sof rye grass, few other plants that were in the mix but not sure what they were. Turkeys loved it, never thought It would bring turkeys in like it did. Deer liked it too.

I will try to plant peas again this year. Will also go to the feed store and buy a bag a rye grass seed and throw it out in a few places.

Yes but we always over seed each year. I go to a local seed store in Terrell. We buy enough seed for 3 plots. I think we spend around $60 or less. It is so worth it. The only prep we do is to mow the weeds.
