I thought I read somewhere those astronauts have a 1 in 289 chance of dyeing during the launch. I wouldn't be crazy about those odds if it were me sitting in that cockpit.

The shuttle guys had a 1 in 65 chance I think. In any case, this is supposed to be much safer, plus they have an escape system if the rocket breaks.

As a kid back in the 60's I still remember watching the astronauts returning from space. A terrible black and white camera on a Navy carrier somewhere in the south Pacific sending live video back to the US. Usually with Walter Cronkite or Frank McGee narrating. Camera pointed at the clouds, peering intently looking for the capsule and parachute to appear. Usually landing in VERY rough seas. I guess they don't do it like that anymore.

I live not too far from the Space-X test site where they do rocket burns frequently. They did have one blow up on the test pad about 2 years ago, but I think that was their last catastrophic failure at the test site. Most of the test burns last around 30 seconds, but every now and then they'll do a long one that lasts several minutes. They will definitely get your attention when the ground starts shaking.

I'll watch it if I'm able. Like others have said, it's reminiscent of watching the Apollo launches when I was a kid. Kind of cool to see someone getting back to basics.

Loved that movie as a kid! One of Don Knott's best. Along with "The Ghost and Mr. Chicken".

While it didn't blow up, the failed attempt of Virgin orbit today would make me a little more nervous about tomorrow if I was going up.

I haven't read the details but are the two astronauts headed to the ISS or just going to orbit the earth for a brief time before returning? If the plan is to return after a brief orbit, will it be a true, rocket touch down landing? I know that's be done with unmanned rockets but perhaps a manned rocket touch down is still a ways off.

No they're headed to the ISS. Will spend an unspecified time there then return to earth with a splashdown off the Florida coast.

We live 6 miles as the crow flies from the Dyess AFB flight line, the old 52's were loud, the newer B1's are loud.but when they are working on the B! engines, sometimes they rattle the windows, I cannot imagine a rocket engine test being that close.
