I still remember when this guy showed up. I had no photos of him and no one else recalled him. It was a cold morning. He showed up at the feed pen breathing hard, with all of it showing and looking like he was going to kick someone's buttox. Main frame nine, kicker ten. Tens have to be mature at our place. So here is this guy, a sturdy beast, not real impressive on top (save for that kicker), but with the potential to really be something. With that neck, body and somewhat squared jaw, I felt he had to be minimum of 4 years old. Btw, I have better video than do photos.

Note to all - there is a "fabrication" in the first post.

We took him at the end of the 18/19 season. Klappenbach did the dirty work. This sucker was physically dominant in our end of the pasture for what seemed like an eternity. We kept thinking he would improve on top of his head, but he just got sturdier in the body. For whatever reason, he seemed to be within that 140 - 150 range, but never made any significant strides. When taken, his left G-1 was gone (like always late in season) and the trident thingie was gone. He had mass all the way down his beams and a 22 & 1/2 outside spread. No telling how many does that sucker covered. Probably our largest, unintended failure managing the herd with the intent to improve antler characteristics. Now can be seen evidence of the "fabrication" I referenced. We believe this guy was seen each and every season for four seasons. We remove jaws, put them in a salt bucket and have to get a game biologist to age them. He, and I know him well, aged him at 5. Needless to say, several of us have issues with this teeth aging process. The date on the photo below is correct. How old would you say this deer is at the time of the photo?

Thanks a ton for posting. Not nearly enough goin on in this section. I had posted all those age and score threads and i would of hoped for more response. I cant figure out the fabrication. If TC dates correct then you missing 17 and 19....?? Beast body-yall feed alot-curious what you think he would weigh fd. I think it confirms that you cant tell with certainty what a buck will do from year to year and some just never get big as others in same environment. But with all the feed and depending on rain and other factors he could still blow up in 19 or 20. Keep posting-im sure you got more. edit--well i finished typing this before seeing Huds last post.

My first thought of the 2016 photo was 5 years old. That would make him a damn good looking 3 year old in 2014.

Hudbone, I have him as a 3 in the 2014 pic. I agree you would have expected him to gain a lot more than he did over those next couple years. Interestingly he seems like he lost a lot every year in the weight dept, roaming or fighting a lot during the rut, esp the last set of pics between late November and early January...his rump looks 20# lighter

2014 age i would say 3. looks too big for that but all things considered looking at the other pics an knowing heavy fed. That would put him 7 when killed which i could see. I dont trust tooth age wear at all. Still confused on no 17 pics and you said 4 years of seeing him but 14 to 18 is 5....?

I'll bet he was 8.5-10.5 when you killed him

I would call him 3 or 4 in the 2014 photo.......he was probably too active to his detriment on the antler side of things IMO....great post....

Buck and Pitch are right in line with my thoughts. We think this guy was so busy with the ladies, he would have a hard time recovering and all nutrition would go back to his body leaving too little for desired antler development. That's why guys who lease out breeder bucks usually put a limit on how many does they can cover. I cannot believe I do not have any photo of this guy from the 17/18 season. He was always there at the feeder consuming protein. Always. I have shown this photo prior, but it puts merit behind this assertion. Maybe I have some saved somewhere else. This photo was taken real close to when Klappenbach laid him down - talk about a run down fighter.

I do wonder how much weight he lost from 10/28 to when that last photo was taken. Less than 90 days, but 1 fourth of the year.

"I prefer to hold a guy accountable for his oversights as opposed to holding it against him". Smart man once told me that. So 5 years documented-how old do you think he was when killed? Great beam and spread but never great mass or tine length including brows. 17 he added a g5-he was trying but genetics held him back along with lifestyle as mentioned. Barely a g4 on right or broke. All just my 2cents. Great thread-lets have some more.

I've got one shed with a kicker on it. We watched that sucker for five seasons. Had to be 7 1/2 at a minimum. Moved a lil' different his last year, possibly due to arthritis or whatever, maybe a year older. Definitely a survivor. We did have bigger bodied dear, but few had his tenacity and toughness. A great beast he was. He just never had "it" on top.

Needless to say, several of us have issues with this teeth aging process. The date on the photo below is correct. How old would you say this deer is at the time of the photo? He has a fairly deep chest in this picture and I'd have called him 4.5, maybe even 5.5. I don't put any stock in aging molars when deer are protein chow hounds! We killed a buck about 8 or 9 years ago we knew beyond any doubt was at least 8.5 and could have been 9.5 because we'd watched him since he was a small 10 point. His teeth said he was 5.5 on one side of the jaw and 6.5 on the other. The teeth simply are not going to wear at a normal rate when they keep their heads in feed troughs their entire life. Last, the one picture you posted from 2018 when he is broadside to the right and looking away I would have called him post mature (over 6.5). He is what I refer to as 'all front end' where their necks swell up huge and their azz end starts looking a bit like it was chopped off in the back. We always called it 'hatchet azzed'. lmao I would not be at all surprised if this buck was 8.5 when you guys killed him. Still a great buck with some coolness to him!
High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!
