The first dam to collapse was known to have inadequate spillways in 1999 which had never been addressed, The Feds finally cancelled their certification a couple of years ago due to inability to get compliance.

That’s not how 100, 500, etc year events work. It’s a percentage chance of it happening in any given year. A 100 year flood has a 1 in 100 chance of happening in any one year, with an average of once every 100 years. The article said the last 500 year flood was in 1986 for that area.

Tittabawassee river runs right through my hometown. I was there for the one in 1986 and our house was about a half mile from the river as the crow flies. No dams failed during that one. This one peaked a few feet higher. lots of friends that had places on Wixom and Sanford lake that flooded. Sad deal.

Yep, they call it the 1% flood (100) and 0.2% flood (500) because that the chance of it happening every year.

So the feds pulled their certification and the state was just said "meh, we will let it ride"?

The dam was privately owned. The lake was scheduled to be drained and repairs made next year i believe.
