Do y’all use the levels and lapping stuff or just put it on there?

Levels and a torque wrench, rifle in a rest. I buy quality rings and use a 1-piece rail on everything so lapping is unnecessary.

Depending on the rings you won't need to lap. Some of the higher wuality rings, they claim lapping does not improve contact to scope tube anyway, because apparently their tolerances are so tight from the factory.
I mount mine with two little levels (weaver i think) and a Weaver torque wrench set. I use a front and rear bag and a small ratchet strap, place a level on the dovetail (edit- beavertail? TANG you big dummy. Dammit bryan) of the rifle and strap it down to the coffee table. Also place a level on the TOP turret, and dangle a 3 oz lead weight from a piece of fishing line tied to a doorknob for a plumbline.
It works for me.

Sounds like you got it down!
I’m going to have 4 scopes to mount in the next month or so. Anyone want to help in exchange for beer or something?

Quality level mounted to rail and a plumb bob hanging as far away as I can focus on it. Bipod and rear bag. The above mentioned ratchet strap would likely speed the process up. I may try that next time.
If it’s not a rifle I’m serious enough about to hang a level on permanently then it’s also not a rifle I stress about getting the scope perfect on. My lever guns are eyeballed pretty close. That’s been enough to take out a pig or so a week at will.

I don't think you have to lap good rings and a plumb bob is all I use to level scope. You need a fat wrench though.

I don’t even know what lapping is but is getting a one piece rail makes it unnecessary I’m all for it. pr Lapping is basically standing the inside of the rings to increase the surface area that is in contact with a scope. manufacturing tolerances on scope tubes and rings hav9leupold e gotten sPro much better that its usually unnecessary. The only time I do it on a customer's gun is with the Leupold-style twist in/dovetail rings, and I avoid those like the plague. One-piece mounts nad some decent, mid-range rings (Leupold PRW2 or Vortex Pro series) are the way to go! plus the one-piece mounts give you WAY more flexibility on eye relief usually.

Buy quality rings and you won't need to lap anything and a plum bob or 4ft level works just as good.

Unless it's a one-piece mount, why wouldn't you lap? The rings might be perfect from the factory but as soon as you put them 4" apart and torque them to the rail things can change. Lapping isn't just about the ring, it's about both rings and their alignment.

You can have the most precise rings in the world, but if your scope mounts are off on the rifle, which alot of them are, you'll still be out of alignment. I used Talley LW"S on my Hill Country Rifles 7Mag, and they had to be lapped. As a matter of fact HCR told me they lap almost every set of rings they mount, period.
As far as mounting the scope properly, IMO you have to get the reticle aligned with the bore of the rifle. Some reticles are slightly canted in the scope, so alignment with the bore is critical for longer ranges. The ReticleTru alignment tool is foolproof.

Lapping isn't just about the ring, it's about both rings and their alignment. I never thought of that. You're right. You have a tolerance stack up on four components. All could be ±.xxx and the concentricity of the two ring Ø's could be out. I don't know if a lapping bar and compound could get them down to a ±.xxx tolerance, but it's an interesting thought. I've never lapped.
An unethical shot is one you take, that you know you shouldn't.

That's why I use a good base as well. Get an EGW base and Seekins rings and I'm 100% confident you do not need to lap.

That would look terrible on my Winchester Featherweight Yeah, I can't help you with that. With tapped receivers, you're at the mercy of manufacturers who often didn't hold up their end of the deal on quality.

These are the best looking rings in my opinion for a classic look. Way cleaner than even the Leupold twist crookeds. https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1781445163Edit: heck I didn’t look at your link to start with. The ones you’ve listed look just like the Talley.

Why not a one piece DNZ game reaper? They don't have quite the classic look of some of the two piece mounts but they dont look very tacticool to me either.

If I must use bases, I usually go to the leupold dual dovetail and Burris Signature bases with posi-lock inserts. They are a very tough and rugged combo, and look great.

Depending on what you do with your weapon and your level of patience look into a pair of Conetrol rings and bases. Pain in the bu.. to get set up correctly. Very elegant and solid afterward.
