GT Distributors in Dallas had quite a bit of 9mm and 5.56 and Academy in San Marcos has a decent supply of 5.56.

This shortage isn't nearly as bad as the last one. Last time, I had very little to start, and I couldn't find anything. This time, i was stocked up...but I have run low on a few items. Between academy.com and midwayusa.com, I've found what I needed with little effort.

Not being made of money, I took the slow and simple approach of "shoot one box, buy two or three." Over time, that adds up way faster than some folks realize. I followed the same approach and my only concern now is the average shelf life of ammo. I think one of the kids peeked in my ammo closet and wondered if I needed to see a shrink. So what is the shelf life of ammo, If kept in climate controlled environment?

My uncle gave me a few card board boxes of ammo/empty brass in factory boxes. Most of it is probably less than 30 years old and some is significantly corroded. I wouldn't fire it. It has been stored inside a house never wet and climate controlled its whole life.

So what is the shelf life of ammo, If kept in climate controlled environment? All I know is that it last a long time. Went to my brother in laws house and he was given a brick of 22 ammo. He was target shooting with it when I seen the boxes I took what was left and gave him new boxes. They were about 50 years old and shot fine. I put them on my display shelf.

I have Russian brass-cased surplus 7.63x54r that was made in 1953. No corrosion and it shoots properly - but I'm not worried about keeping my ammo another 65-70 years. Been storing my ammo in new steel ammo cans with a good airtight seal - with a small desiccant pack in each one. A room dehumidifier holds that room at 40% to 45% RH for old family photos/slides and other stuff too. The desiccant packs have a moisture indicator card on one side - similar to these, and really keep the interior of an ammo box dry! Moisture indicator cards

I’ve got a lot of old M1 carbine 30 cal FMJ ammo/magazines, and that stuff still shoots just fine. It’s probably mid 1950’s because my Mom used to shoot it as a kid. It has been inside and not exposed to the humidity all these years.

My dad left me with a crapload of ammo, some of it well over 30 years old, haven't found a dud yet. All kept inside and in great shape. from .22, .22 wmr, .410 12/20 ga., 30-06, 30-30 all has shot fine.
Haven't had it in years but never spit any out. I am a sucker for happy endings and strapped cowboys.

Ordered some 40 and 380 from bulk ammo, only took 4 days to receive it. They have some good prices on sale when you catch it righr.

This. Also, went to Academy near my house about a couple of weeks ago as I saw they were having a sale on 223 ammo. Since it was just a few minutes drive, I went and saw they had a lot in stock. I got excited but then I read a big sign that said "limit 1 per customer". I ended up with a box with 20 rounds.

So what is the shelf life of ammo, If kept in climate controlled environment? My firearms forensics folks explained to me that as long as it's not contaminated by petroleum products, water or extreme humidity, climate controlled ammo will last indefinitely. I asked for a time in years and they said as along as it's not compromised, the chemical structure of the primers and powder does not ever degrade.
