Last week we caught a 225 lb. boar hog west of Menard that had double cutters on the left side. I have never seen this before, have any of you? I posted the photo on facebook on CARNIVORE TV page. Kim Powell, 5th Grade teacher at Menard was our hunter. Adios, Gary

I have seen a pic of it from somebody else's hunt, the extra cutter (canine). It is called a supernumerary(extra/excessive number, or extra) tooth. Occasionally, but far from exclusively, it is the return of a tooth lost evolutionarily. For example, I knew a guy that had a 1st or 2nd lower premolar in his jaw when normally humans have #s 3 and 4 with #s 1&2 lost evolutionarily. Given enough time, wisdom teeth or 3rd molars will be considered supernumerary teeth as they are currently being lost over time as the morphology of our faces change.
Sometimes, it is a duplication of a tooth (sounds like what you have), thought to be caused by reasons such as a dichotomy of a tooth bud or conditioned hyperactivity of the dental lamina. They may be caused by a few disorders resulting in alteration of the dental arcade during formation and outside of that, can be hereditary in some cases. These often, but not always, occur in unexpected places and at odd angles.

Go to CARNIVORE TV facebook page and you can see this boar as well as the oldest boar I have ever caught. We caught the old boar on Monday and the double cutter boar a couple of days later. The hunts will be aired on CARNIVORE this season. Adios, Gary

Not everybody does Facebook. Plus, this way for the rest of the folks, they don't have to open a new tab, go to Facebook, search Facebook for the page, and the scroll looking for the image you are talking about. Saves folks a lot of hassle to show a pic you already have

That's pretty wild looking. Wonder if it helps them fighting at all

That's pretty wild looking. Wonder if it helps them fighting at all I doubt that it helps much but would generate a double cut on the opposing boar. The long single cutters are very destructive, especially when driven by the power this big hogs can generate. Adios, Gary

I asked my buddy, Phil Lyne who has caught and seen about as many wild hogs as anyone I know if he had seen a boar with double cutters and he said, "No". So I am saying that it is really rare. Adios, Gary

It is about as rare as any other supernumerary tooth. He has probably never seen any other supernumerary teeth, either. The only reason this is getting noticed is that it is a tusk, readily notable on the outside. He would not have noticed (nor would most folks) had this been on a you hog where the tooth was not protruding so much. So when you say 'rare,' it is a rare genetic abnormality. Some genetic abnormalities are more common than others, but being abnormalities puts all of them in to the 'rare' category because they are abnormalities.
I have known hugely experienced hunters and trappers who have never seen or heard of mulefooted hogs. They have probably killed our caught them but never noticed. The condition is rare, but it doesn't stand out and so you need to be looking for it to notice it.

I have never seen the mule footed hogs in South Texas or the Hill Country, yet hear of them fairly often in East Texas. Adios, Gary

Yeah, it just seemed rather unnecessary to come on to THF and talk about something and not bother to post a picture you already have for the members here who you are addressing or to even bother to post a direct link, but to instead make the people who might have FB to have to search through your stuff to find it. It leaves those without FB in the dark.
