I am looking at a place on The Salt Fork of the Brazos just north of Aspermont. Although the area is completely different that what I am used to, I find it to be very intriguing and beautiful - perhaps in its own way. Anyone with experience in the area that could offer opinions, input, observations etc would be appreciated.

Not looking for a trophy deer place - just peace and quiet and a few respectable animals to put in the crosshairs and on the dinner table each season.

Well, there's peace & quiet there. No doubt about that. Also an insidious red sand that gets into everything, everywhere. I've been there and find the country mesmerizing. I have seen many a good buck come from that wide open territory. The ranch I was on had one fence line with the Pitchfork, I believe. Can't recall for certain.

That's also somewhere right near the mule deer/ white tail transition line and I have seen a 200 plus point muley.

In addition, you can hunt varmints for days on end.

I looked at a Ranch close to there 13 years ago but went with my current place instead. Really worked out great but don't know what would have happened if went other way. This place was on the river and seemed to have lots of cedar and all that red sand. Didn't seem like anything much was growing at all. I know every place can vary from place to place and I know a lot of that "general" area of the world can be real good(good deer and Mules close by). I guess you could say I liked the landscape but not the habitat(if that makes sense.) I don't know enough about that specific area to put much weight on this though. I do know guys that hunt pretty close out there and do well but that country can vary pretty quick(like everywhere.) Starting to get redundant so I better bug out. Good luck.

I've heard good quality, lower densities. May take some bigger acreage to "fit the bill" or at least be close to bigger property...

When it rains, it will be the mudhole from hell. Hunted SW of there for many years. Decent deer and in wet years we had quail out the wazoo. Like someone else mentioned, it's right on the edge of mule deer country. I would see a mule deer buck about every other year. Only killed one in the 12 years I hunted that ranch.

I have a place south of Aspermont, near the Double Mountain Fork of the Brazos. I've been pleasantly surprised with the deer numbers and body size of the deer in the area. I've never seen a true giant but have seen plenty of very respectable deer from the area. I've only seen a few mulies on my place but have seen an elk and a red deer on game camera too. Lots of hog and varmints too. Quail numbers seem like most places depend on the rain. I love my place and for such a small town Aspermont has a good feed store, grocery store and a heck of a little hardware store that has saved me a time or two in a pinch. Great area, especially close to the 'salt fork'. Hunted next door in Kent county for years. We were also on the salt fork. Definitely quality over quantity.

Beautiful country. Lots of pigs and deer. Some good ones.

Hunted on a friends place for several years, a few miles west of where the OP stated. Plenty of deer and hogs. Good years also had great dove hunting and a very good quail population. It was in the sandy area which worked out well...it could pour rain for hours, yet dry out very quickly.....on the other hand, the sand burrs really sucked.

Thank you to everyone who contributed experiences, observation and opinions. Sounds like the input is that the hunting opportunities are good, but beware of the red dirt and be afraid of the red mud.

Just do it. I just got on a ranch that is bordered 3 sides by the Salt Fork. Lots of pigs, varmits, tons of does and lots of young bucks with opportunities for 160-170. Was there recently and every evening would see literally hundreds of deer in the wheat fields with pigs mingled right in with the deer and cattle. Pics of red deer at feeders. Red dirt dust will get in everywhere

20+ years ago I had a barber that quail hunted that area severely, severely enough that if he did not have a customer in the shop about noon on Friday, he closed and headed to Aspermont from Texarkana.. Quail hunting must have been great cause even after several customers complained he said tough. I know several that found a new barber, myself included. Daniel
