Made this blade from a seat spring from an old wooden horse drawn wagon. The scales are Bois-D'arc that I made from an old foundation block that came out from under a house that was built in 1900. Brass pins and blue liners round things out. 6 1/2" overall with a cutting edge of 2 3/4". I like to take materials that would otherwise have wound up thrown away or rotted or rusted away and giving them a new purpose in this world.

I agree with re purposing materials. Nice knife. How well does that metal hold an edge?

Knowing Mike that will hold an edge; more than likely it's 5160 steel and Mike will get about a 60HRC.You have to remember one thing about steel, it's not how good the steel is, it's how good is the person heat treating it. Mike knows how to get the most out of each particular piece of steel.

Excellent knife!

And we are cut from the same cloth on saving good materials. I hate throwing away even old stout, useful materials. Well done sir, as usual.

Bob's right, most of the old springs were made from 5160 steel. I always make sure any of the old steel I turn into a knife will harden before I spend the time and effort making a blade out of it. I've yet to come across any of the old springs that wouldn't harden. Like Bob says they normally come out at 60 to 61 HRC after heat treat and tempering.
