We have been using a borrowed GM powerglide in my granddaughters race car since the end of last season.
It belongs to a member of our racing family and wasn't being used but we hate to use borrowed stuff any longer than needed.
My son found a few powerglides that had been pulled and put in storage 20+ years ago and we brought some of them home!

I started by purchasing a good manual and going to UToob University for about 30 hours.
After getting educated, we ordered a Master rebuild kit and started getting ready.
I built a stand to make working on it easy and built quite a few tools to pull the pump, compress springs in clutch packs and remove/install bushings.
I took my time on this one as it was the first and I built tools specific to the job at hand as I went along and used the internet and UToob if/when a question came up.
Start to finish took about 10 days but there were lots of stops and more specifically, waiting on little parts that were not in the Master rebuild kit specific to performance.

Since I am getting smarter as I get older, I don't like lifting and straining moving stuff (because that kinda stuff tends to hurt) I built a fixture that bolts on side of transmission and allows you to get to everything. It also fits into an engine stand so you can flip it over pretty easily. I added a lift eye to the fixture to make it even easier to deal with. I bolt the fixture to the transmission with 2 bolts and I can move it with my FEL to take outside to wash, etc. and easily install into the engine stand with the engine lift.

I started with a 1970 V8 Powerglide core.

After about 10 days of tweeking, tuning, massaging parts, etc. this is the result.

Since this is a racing transmission that we run in low only and only has to have 1 forward and reverse, the high gear clutch pack internals and govenor that controls automatic shifts was removed and saved 7 pounds of spinning weight and lost lots of drag and heat produced inside the high gear clutch drum while running in low only.

Here is a shot of her making laps on the practice track behind the shop. She has ran 3 seasons in karts and is moving up to full size cars.

Clean looking rebuild or should I say build. Looks like you took working smarter not harder to the next level.

If you need to order any tranny parts, I recommend Broader Performance in Weatherford. He’s also a master rebuilder.

Thanks for the kind words folks!

This first one took a while mostly due to waiting for parts to arrive.
My terminal tinkeritus also kicked in and I had to play with everything to see how each part works and what it does.
You haven't lived until you pull the planetary apart and you have a huge pile of loose needle bearings and spacers laying there.
Drilling out passages for more flow to various parts and drilling/tapping to 1/4" NPT for the oil cooler took a while because I was being extra careful and double checking.
I also modified a few small parts like speedo plug, modulator plug and reworked the shifter shaft assy to remove and plug the throttle kick down.

I have to do another one shortly for my DIL as she is going to start racing again.
If I have all of the parts laying here I'm pretty sure I could do the next one in 2-4 hours depending on how much I have to repair/build.

The one above is in this pile somewhere due a recent stimulus check buy...and you can see why I built the tooling and fixtures.

Since they haven't been built since early 70's, they are getting more and more scarce but there is a strong demand and the aftermarket is thriving and you can build one without a single GM part including cases.
Just a core like those in last pic go for about 250 ea for a 1967 and later that the circle track folks favor.
There is a aircooled unit in that pile from a 63 Vette and a one for a 62-63 Impala SS that are worth a good bit more due to shifter mounts on tail housing and pedigree.
As for a new race ready unit, they start well over 1K and run up to 8-9K for a total aftermarket drag unit that will hold well pretty much anything you can throw at it, even in a monster truck.

A good torque converter that matches your engine and intended use makes quite a difference and can range from slushbox to full stall lockup.
This class is for beginners and requires basically stock engines so it idles at under 1000 RPM and we use a 10" Fast Lap converter that's legal for this class with 1800-2000 RPM stall that stays hooked up and allows engine breaking going into corners and is still hooked up as you accelerate like a manual but if you get a yellow, spin or get in accident, it will unlock and allow the engine to idle and not die. Since we run low only, it takes off easily from dead stop.

And as for the cushion, we have a barb wire fence on one side and mesquites on other side and the turns are off camber too!
We built it for her as she is only 14 and hasn't driven cars and trucks that much.
She has been racing karts for 3 seasons fairly successfully so she's not a total noob but we didn't want her driving thru the pits and throw her onto the track with zero full size car experience.
If she can get around the practice track with all of that going against her, a banked track is a chipshot!
She put in about 150 laps here and then we had first practice back in BC (Before Covid) on the track and she did pretty well so the track time helped.

It gets considerably more interesting when my son sends it in his Open class Methanol IMCA Modified.

We removed the borrowed Powerglide this morning and installed the new one.
Since it rained 1.6" overnight and I just plowed/leveled the test track yesterday it's a lotta slippy out there.
We had to do the second best thing and make a few 1/2 mile test runs on the paved County road.
Transmission does what it is supposed to do, the motor seems to like the combination and Granddaughter is happy with it.

We I totally retired early in 2016 I started helping full time, we ran Cotton Bowl Speedway for two seasons and start of 3rd.
I built the motor for the second season and he won two Features and got second overall for season at track in IMCA Southern Sport Mod.
Minor disagreement a few races into 3rd season and we traveled around to HOT in Waco, 281 in Stephenville and ended up at Texana in Edna and finished the season there.

Last season, we jumped into IMCA Modified with both feet and ran the entire season at Texana.
Right after the prior season, my son picking up a fresh from powdercoat "mostly" roller, then a used Chevy 383 methanol motor, Brinn transmission, Winters QC rearend and started bolting stuff together where we thought it should go, bent up a body on a 7' metal brake I made using a D7 cutting edge and put it on the track.
We didn't win any races but went in pretty green in that class.
We worked thru learning Methanol and other fun stuff that is all new to us!
We did manage to finish 2nd overall for the season in IMCA Modified and my son missed Rookie of the Year because the guy that won his class was also a rookie.

Gonna run the Modified at Texana again.
They have the EMod class there also so Granddaughter can run in there too.

Ever gluttons for punishment, we are putting together a 3rd car for DIL...LOL!!

Testing the transmission on our very dusty test track Wednesday.
Headed to Texana Raceway Park in Edna, Tx for season opener this Sunday!
Gotta go over weights and balances and load up.
Have a new set of HK custom shocks for the IMCA Modified to install too.
Gonna be a busy day today getting ready!
