Has anyone ever drawn the New Mexico Valle Vidal archery elk tag? Any information would be appreciated.

I haven’t, but I know a few that have. It doesn’t have the top end quality that units in the Gila have, but there’s some pretty serious bulls there, lots of them, and they’re relatively easy to hunt. They respond well to calls.

Congrats is all I can say. I have driven by the Caldera. Beautiful country and there were about 300 head of elk just hanging out right off the road.

OP- Not saying you should hirer a guide but that’s once in a life time tag with a legit opportunity at the mid 300’s on up.
It probably has one of the better all round herds in NM not just quality but quantity also

Great area for a DIY hunt, get you a good one. Not a knock to BoBo I just feel you can get a nice bull without paying a guiide . Congrats on a great license.

No knock your are 100% right, probably the most DIY friendly unit in the state by far. But it’s also not a unit you will ever hunt again. Id take a friend that would stay in my ear about not shooting the first 250 three year old that came in screaming.

I drew a rifle tag in the late 80's. Use a guide even if you have to borrow the money. Best elk hunt I have ever had. Turned down eight makeable shots at "shooters" (anywhere else) and culled ten more with optics ON THE SECOND DAY! Ended up with a great 7X7. The rangers estimated at 1200 pounds. Better have pack animals! Be patient, don't get in a hurry to shoot and don't take the first "great" bull. My guide got aggravated at me because I would not shoot so we ended up hunting the "solo bulls" after he figured out that I might screw up his 100% record of kills.
