I bought a new Remington 700 VLS and was wondering if the fit of this floor plate in normal.
When I close it, it doesn’t sit flush and you can even see some light through it.

I compared it to my other Remington 700 (Varmint Special from 1976) and the floor plate fit on that one is perfect.


It’s not a big deal and everything functions as it should. But since I’m slightly gun OCD, I have to ask if this is common.

They don’t make em like they used to. Fit and finish varies more today than those 70’s guns.

Nobody has a hinged floor plate they can check?

How the BDL (hinged floor plate) sits depends on the bedding and how the action/stock mate up. You can unscrew the action screws to take the action out of the stock and see where it's hitting and try to get it more flush. If it was a replacement stock, it's common for the bottom metal to need some adjustment to make it fit, feed, and line up correctly. With a little work, you can make it flush yourself.

Thanks a lot. I will look into it. At the same time the gun feeds and functions perfectly. So if it's too involved, I'll just let it be as is.

I don't have a Remington 700 right now, but I've had several over the years. They were mostly snug fits, but I did have a couple that weren't quite as snug. I also had one that was so tight I sometimes had to press on the floor plate while I was pushing the release to pop it open. I don't believe it affected performance either way.

I had a Model 70 that did the same thing, you could see a touch of daylight through it. It always held, and always functioned (though it has been replaced with a CDI/AI mag).
