Cut down 3 large holly trees. Got 3 stumps left and no stump grinder.

Thoughts. ?

Drill holes and fill with kerosene? Diesel?

Cover with charcoal?

Dig down around the stump about a foot deep. Cut the stump off as close to ground level or slightly below if possible. Drill holes and fill with diesel until it won’t soak in anymore. Cut both ends out of a 55 gallon barrel and place over the stump. Fill the barrel about half way with wood....good way to get rid of the top of the tree. As it burns down keep feeding the barrel. Air pulled in around the bottom of the barrel makes a very hot fire around the stump.

I used this method on over 20 oak stumps in our yard. I used a barrel and a large piece of pipe.

My dad drilled holes, filled with diesel and let it soak in, then add more diesel. Did this for a couple weeks and then then lit it on fire. Burned for 3 days. roflmao

Get a long shaft paddle bit at least 1" in diameter. Drill straight down as far as you can multiple holes 8-10 inches apart. Pour diesel in all the holes several times over the span of a couple of days, it will soak in and it's obvious when it needs more. Fill one last time and set it on fire. It will burn for days as long as there's not a heavy rain. I used this method after live oak decline went through my ranch many years ago.

Dig as much dirt from around the stumps, maybe a foot deep.
Build a fire in that hole and keep adding wood to the coals.

Stump grinders are a PITA. I would go with Snake’s method.

Removed mesquite stumps in a similar method,

If you got the whole family get them out there whacking at it with an a sharp axe. Take it down about 6 - 8 inches below ground level. Drill a couple dozen holes in it, fill those with diesel and cover. I have removed a few dozer mesquites like that and none have come back. Oaks you don't even need the diesel. I don't know anything about hollys.

this is how i do it. i also punch lots of holes in the sides of the barrel with a .22. helps let the oxygen in and burn real hot and fast.

Drill 2” paddle bit hole as deep as you can. Put one stick of dynamite down in hole. Light fuse and get away.

I put a few holes around the base. I also cut four 3' long 2" pieces of pipe. I laid them out around the stump then put the barrel on them....turns the barrel into a jet engine...very hot fire all around the stump.

Well, I did as SW recommended, I dug all around that mesquite stump with great intentions of building a fire on it. With the neighbors kids coming around and my blind lab running into everything I just couldn't see leaving a smoldering fire out there, so I just dug it up.
That was only a 14" mesquite, man that was tough.
Stump is gone down to 6" deep, I will be buying a new chain saw blade soon. bang

If none of the above suggestions work....rent one of these. Might be just a little overkill but just think how much fun it would be and all the little kids on the block would be thinking you are one cool dude. [Linked Image]
