Or a similar species? My 3 year old found this under our trailer this weekend. Doesn’t have the same coloration of most of the honey toads I’ve seen. Anyone know what this is?

Maybe a juvenile greater short horned lizard? He’s living under our porch at the lease so hopefully he sticks around.

Used be a regular sighting, now a rare day to see one.

I’ve lived in Texas my entire life and is the first one I’ve seen in the wild.

I see them every time I walk the ranch hunting arrowheads. That is a Round Tail, we find them in rocky area's around the hills while the Horned Lizards seem to stick to flatter terrain. They're smaller than the Horned Lizard, don't believe I've ever seen one over about 3 inches. I've seen Horned Lizards over 5 inches.

Do you use very much pesticide on the ranch. When the boll weevil eradication program spraying started was when we lost both quail and the horny toads.

None at all. I'll see 15 to 20 a day just running the roads.

The introduction of FIRE ANTS took a heavy toll on anything nesting or living on the ground including red ants, quail and desert tortoises. Much more lethal than murder hornets will ever be.

Lost our population in the early 80's when the fie ants moved in.

Texas Horned Lizards were so prevalent when I was a kid we preferred them over baseball cards. I normally had at least four every weekend.

Like I said earlier I see them daily, I've got at least 3 different ones hanging around the garden area of the house. It's just my theory and I may be full of chit but the answer is ant's! When I was a kid we could run around and find Horny Toads just about anywhere, everybody had a few on the place and especially the lot's between houses. If you wanted to find a HT in the lots or the pasture you looked for a big ant bed and then start checking any shaded area's around it, when it get's hot they head for the shade. South of the house a couple of hundred yards was a perimeter fence for Webb Air Force Base, they had a fence about a mile long. On a hot day you could walk that fence line and find HT's in the shade of the fence posts, picked up 18 in one day. I bring that up to explain the ant's. That area has changed very little since I was a kid, only difference is they took the fence down when the base closed in 77, seeing a HT now is pretty rare.. Back when I was a kid ant beds were everywhere and you just dealt with it, now we poison every bed we see and remove their primary food source. We've starved them out.

I've got at least 4 fair sized ant beds on the place now and developing a small herd of HT's.

Yep, growing in the Permian Basin in the 70's, we would see them everywhere. Not so much anymore, cool little creatures.

When I was a kid in Dallas 55 years ago they were around the house East Dallas Barnes Bridge/Garland Rd. area. I always heard Chlordane killed em.

Lived in Richardson at the same time. Lots of HT's back then...but there were lots of Texas Native Red Ants too. This was before 'fire ants'.

Saw one at my grandparents place in Comanche several years ago.
