Everywhere I've ever hunted WT in Texas, I've hunted near large openings next to thick trees. I'm looking @ a lease now but pretty much the only place to hunt that's not @ least 5' tall (to 40 foot) trees is shooting lanes. Most of them are on power lines & they're roughly 30-50 feet wide, but very long. I could easily set a feeder 100+ yards away from the blind & see past it 100's of more yards. It just seems like it's not enough open area to hunt decently but I've seen S. Texas places where they hunt solely senderos. This lease is in southeast Texas in pine forest country. Do any of y'all hunt heavily treed areas w/only shooting lanes? Thanks.

I have never cut a shooting lane for hunting.

This could be called a shooting lane its two pipelines running side by side.During the rut we watch a few deer run across some way out of range but still like to see.

Also good place to plant a food plot All the spots I'm talking about are half , maybe only 1/3rd, that width. Like you said, I'd imagine the deer would just run from one side to the other. IDK if a feeder would slow them down in that situation or not.

Pipelines and powerlines! Two of my favorite places to hunt!

Our ten-man 900 acres lease in S.E. Louisiana is primarily thick pine plantation. Most of the stands face food plots ranging from 1/4 to 3/4 acres with feeders. Each stand also has shooting lanes going off to right and left side. The lanes are about twenty feet wide and anywhere from 100 to 200 yards long. Some lanes have feeders, most don't. The majority of the nice bucks we kill are taken off of those shooting lanes. They don't typically go straight across a lane. They enter a lane and walk up or down it for 25 to 50 yards or so before exiting.

on our place in east Texas NE from Fairfield, one of my setups has a narrow lane that goes out to about 90 yards. Deer & hogs pass thru it but like you stated, usually too quick for a good look much less a clean shot. How I have resolved this issue, is to corn that lane with either a small pile where they cross or use a road feeder to corn a path. Works like a charm.

My hunting has been pretty limited to texas. I have hunted in the piney woods, central, south, and west texas. Pretty much all of them involved some type of cleared shooting lane/sendero etc. Deer are edge critters, I like to think of a pipeline/sendero/highline etc. as one big man made edge. Plant it in something and its a good food plot.
I would try to familiarize yourself with shooting further distance as you will have to pass opportunities if they are out of your range.

Plant a food plot in the pipeline and be at the ready with rifle. I have taken many deer in E TX on narrow pipelines. They usually step out and pause before then walking up/down a little and before crossing. The food plot will help hold the does and young deer. Walk the pipeline and find your major crossing areas and then back off each direction to find your best stand location with ability to enter/exit without crossing the deer crossing area.

I usually corn the openings and have good luck with it. One bigger buck I chased would run from side to side and stand off to the side. Really the only deer that has done that to me on a regular basis.

Not for me. I like to see around. Doesn’t mean I see better deer, but it sure makes the time more enjoyable than just looking one direction

Just a little food for thought! Get yourself a good doe decoy and place it on the shooting lane about 30 to 50 yards from yourself. Nearly any buck during pre rut, rut, or even post rut will look up and down a crossing before moving on! They see a doe, it will lock them up long enough for a shot !

I hunt in Harrison County in East Texas on a pipeline on 40 acres surrounded by deer leases. I am lucky to see deer. I don't ever plant food plots. I have a pop-up blind sitting on an old rail road bed crossing the pipe line. I have a corn feeder to my left and one to my right. I do try to mow the pipe line around my feeders. I usually see deer crossing and over the years I have killed some good bucks. I believe I was just in the right place at the right time and the good Lord blessed me.

Plant food plots, even something cheap like rye grass in the fall, and you will probably see more deer. After you mow around your feeders, mow a few hundred feet on either side of your blind and throw out out some rye grass seed, lime, and Triple 13 in the fall. It can make a difference. Another thing you might do is use one feeder instead of two, and place it to train deer to walk past your blind to get to the other feeder that still has corn in it. Just my .02, LeonCarr

The last 2 pictures show the angle from my bow stand and the angle from my Dad's rifle stand. I mow the lane for my Dad to use during rifle season. The rest of the place is left natural. We see lots more deer that way since it is only 20 acres and deer just pass through it. Most of the other pics are on 7500 acres in South Texas and just drop corn and deer come out before it hits the ground.

Should I mow the entire width of pipeline or just a couple of strips? Please explain last sentence above.

IME a couple of strips should be fine, I would mow the strips wide enough (40-50 feet) to allow you to see multiple deer feeding in the food plot strip at the same time, and mow them as long as you feel comfortable shooting. Shorter length if you are a bow hunter, longer length if your favorite deer rifle is a .338 Lapua . Are your two feeders at the edge of the pipeline or out in the open area in the middle of the pipeline? Are the deer plentiful enough that two feeders are necessary? If not, one feeder might more centralize the movement of the deer for more shot opportunities, and save on your corn bill. Just my .02, LeonCarr

We hunt in SE Texas on timber company land and almost the only way to hunt is on shooting lanes (pipelines, old roads or cleared lanes). We use feeders (with pens to keep out the hogs and we just corn the lanes with a road feeder when we are hunting and most of the time the deer will stop when they are crossing and take a bite. Sometimes that's the only way to go.
