Had one as a pet when I was in high school that I caught near Toledo Bend. Man, that dude was an escape artist!

Correct.

We have a bunch of them around here. I was mowing along fence lines today and just happened to spot this one. Saw a buttermilk racer yesterday when mowing...but it got underneath the barbed wire cross fence before I could catch it and I didn't feel like chasing it any further.

Glad to see both species doing well.

I like having harmless snakes around.

You think that’s bad, I kept a common water snake as a pet for years until mom made me get rid of it when we came home from a camping trip and took us 3 days to find the escaped snake! She was convinced it was a cottonmouth the whole time. roflmao

I used to find those on a regular basis in my shrubs when I lived in Fort Worth. They were quite docile and would let you handle them most of the time. When they were getting ready to shed, not so much. Neat little snakes.

Hognose Snake. They flatten themselves out like that, make all kinds of horrible hissing sounds, puff up their body, make 'fake' strikes (you couldn't make one bite you) then when all that fails, they roll over and play dead. You can right them, and they'll roll over again.

They are a docile snake, but put on a 'show' like no other snake I can think of. They 'act' like they are part Cobra, part Wolverine and would just savage you if you got close enough...but its all a put on. I would place them in the top 5 of snakes least likely to bite you even when handled.
