How much ammo do you try to keep in stock for pistols and AR's?
What's the reason you keep that round count, and how often do you shoot? When you go shoot, how many rounds do you go through?
Just trying to see if there is an average baseline for the regular joe.

Just trying to see if there is an average baseline for the regular joe. Really depends on usage and time mgmt. Now I prefer to do big runs over a weekend. A few years ago when shooting pistol matches I was loading every other week

In the tragic boating accident I lost 1500 rds each of 5.56 and 9mm, 150rds of 6.8, 100 rds each of .308 and 6.5CM, and around 5000 rds of .22LR.

It's a little bit more than almost enough.

Just pistol and AR’s. I keep enough loaded to last a couple years 1500-2000 or so. I only shoot a few club matches these days so I don’t go thru it as fast as when my son lived nearby and I had to load for us both. But after going thru these 3-4 shortages I now keep enough primers/ powder/ bullets that my grandson will loading and shooting the last of my current stash.
"Anyone taking up handloading necessarily plays with unknown factors and takes chances. But so does anyone who drives a car, goes to a cocktail party, eats in a restaurant,or gets married."

I have a lot of ammo, I want a lot more. When these "how much ammo" threads come up it always reminds of the quote, "you can never have too much ammo, unless you're swimming".

Yeah, I know these threads can get annoying, but I'm just trying to see how much the average person shoots as a minimum. I kind of want a stock pile to always have. I can burn through some ammo too. Usually when I go shoot clays I shoot a case, 250 rounds, an outing.

I don't reload anymore. When I did, I viewed it as a chore and it was never one I liked to do.
That said, I believe you should have all the ammo you will ever need if for some reason you can no longer purchase it again (I believe that's true with a lot of things, not just guns and ammo but that's a different discussion).
Minimum threshold for me is 3000 rounds per caliber, I begin to feel comfortable at 5000rds per caliber. This applies for all but .22LR of which you own tens of thousands of rounds or you got nothing.

Another question, how mags do you like to have per gun?
Where do you personally draw the line on that?

I have two magazines for each of my hunting rifles and, I think, eight magazines for my AR. Two magazines for most pistols. One pistol has four magazines - two each of two sizes. PS I now have one (bolt) rifle that I no longer have a need for magazines thanks to FiremanJG and the too-long-for-magazine load he forced me to choose! No joking, there was a gun involved! Sheesh!

If you have loose ammo not in a mag, you need more mags. If you have empty mags you need more ammo. If you have full mags and no loose ammo, you need more mags and ammo.

Just trying to see if there is an average baseline for the regular joe. For the AR's I have an established load for, I keep a couple thousand rounds loaded in total. There's quite a bit of components in storage. My only AR's I don't have a good amount of ammo for are the 7-08 and 6.8. I haven't found the most accurate load for the 7-08 and the 6.8 isn't really a rifle I like shooting due to poor ballistics. For pistols, I don't even know how much loaded ammo I have for each. It's enough to just about fill several tubs. I don't shoot that often since other hobbies have taken over; maybe a dozen times a year. I'll probably go through a couple hundred rounds of ammo each time I go.
