Looks like I may have some time to do some turkey hunting on my next 7 days off. Been looking at hunting public land up in Oklahoma. Hoping somebody could point out a couple places to try. Not going to have but maybe 3 or 4 days to hunt. Looking at coming straight up I-35. Should I go west or east of 35?

Not aware of any worthwhile Turkey hunting off 35 that is not a draw. I would go to any large WMA in SE OK where I could use a free primitive camp isolated from other hunters and locals. Then get in deep every day with some calls until I find and roost an eastern to set up on the next morning. If you don't like what you see or hear on day one, consider picking up and moving to the next nearest WMA. The wildlife department area descriptions will tell you which WMAs have Turkeys. I find they are usually accurate. My personal best Turkey was taken with that simple plan. Good luck Sqiggy.

Guess I'm just gonna have to call the dept. Went back and looked, for example, Cross Timbers WMA shows the area is closed April 8-12 and May 2-6 for controlled turkey hunts, then just under that, it list Closed Seasons with Spring Turkey included, so that tells me that is by draw. But there are a few others that do list Spring Turkey. Just need to make sure that the ones I'm looking at don't have a closed season.

Hint. Find the game descriptions, not just the list of open game. Just because they are listed does not mean there are huntable numbers. Cross Timbers is a draw.

It's nice to get away from people right now. Living off the land some to extend my food. No news. No politics. No stock market. No Covid. No people. Nearest person to me last few days was in a fighter jet that wizzed overhead. I'd say meet me there, separated camps of course, but I am already in young county hunting fishing metal detecting etc. last 10 days.

Most of eastern Oklahoma especially south Eastern has a different season for Turkeys. I'd look up dates.

Yessir, April 20 I believe. But I'm not planning going that far east. Looks like I have a plan if work doesn't mess it up. Found about 3 WMA's all pretty close together, along with Corps Land, Probably close to 20,000 acres. Throw up a tent right there on the WMA, and plan to hunt 3 or 4 days.

Robbers Cave state park is full of turkey. Pressure is light on the weekdays too. The WMA on the south side of Hugo Lake had them several years ago too. Don't know if it is draw, uou would have to look. Have also seen several on Copan WMA as I drive by the last 40 years. Again, don't know if it is draw either. That is all I am giving up right now. My friends hunt the other areas I know about and would be upset if I sent others their way.

Went to a place a week and half ago. Arrived on a Sat. afternoon, set up camp, and went out to see if I could roost a bird or 2. Never heard a gobble. Got up Sun. morning, got out right before daylight, covered A LOT of ground and never heard a bird. Repeat for Mon, never heard a gobble. Was thinking of packing it in till I talked to a guy that was camping 75 yards from me. Said he has heard all the gobbling right there at camp. He was leaving that afternoon and suggested I stay one more night and just stay at camp. So I did. Finally heard my first gobble that evening as they were on roost, but he was way off. Then I heard a second bird, a little closer. Tue. morning, while making breakfast, I hear 4 different birds. 2 were just hammering it, but time I got thru eating and headed their way, they just quit. Once I got in the vicinity, I got set up and made a few calls. Nothing!!!
Now that I'm back on my seven days off, I'm headed out in the morning to a different place. Gonna try it out and see what happens.
