I thought aluminum wire was illegal to use in residential construction, the reason I ask is my daughters neighbor had trouble with his A/C and it turned out one lead had burned in two, he said they used aluminum wire from the panel to the unit outside. House was built in 2004.

It’s still allowed. The issue is it needs to be sized properly.14ga copper should be 12ga aluminum.

Not illegal. I wouldn't use it especially to an AC with the temperature variations.

My house in New Orleans had aluminum wiring. Only live there 3 years had one outlet go bad.

Not illegal, a lot of service cables are aluminum
