Need a better photo but looks like a common Tan Racer to me.

How big a snake was it?

Edit: Enlarged the photo where my old eyes could see it better. See the alternating color pattern and scales better now. Coachwhip.

Looks like a cross between a coachwhip and a milk snake.

A distant cousin of mine farmed about 1600 acres. I helped him out during the summers (never got to drive any of the equipment though). EVERY time we saw a snake he would say "That's a rattleheaded copper moccasin". Didn't matter what it really was, the answer was the same.

I've looked on line a couple times and thru a couple of my reference books and can't find anything with the coloration/pattern….body style is racer/coachwhip/rat snake...but can't even find color variants with that pattern...

scratch

Still looking.... bang

The SW is stumped! eek2

I believe in you, sir! Standing by for the answer.

Do snakes cross-breed? Hybrid?

I can’t find anything either, wonder if it’s invasive/released pet?

My best guesses are coachwhip or some type of king snake.

Yes...but within subspecies...for example, there are broad-band/southern copperhead crosses where their ranges cross but you won't get a copperhead/rat snake cross....

Between Houston and San Antonio so could be....I thought about this too...I looked at corn snakes who have bands and similar coloration....maybe a released/escaped pet???? confused2

Nothing I've found has a similar (or even close) pattern…..

Wish we had better pictures....

I wouldn't get hung up on the pattern (though unusual for this region) since Coachwhips can display an incredible variety of colors and patterns.

The one the OP posted has definite alternating colors (almost like bands) which immediately dismisses it being a Tan Racer like I first thought. But Coachwhip is very 'doable'.

Alternating pattern on this one:
