I found this in a wooded area I rarely frequent. Looks to have been there awhile. I had about 75 yards of hot wire missing a from a fence a few years ago, never knew what happened to it until I found this. I guess one of these bucks got it caught on his antlers , then fighting with the other they got it wrapped around their antlers and eventually laid down a died from starvation and dehydration. Couldn't figure out how it had so many wraps, maybe from trying to get free they were turning their head in circles. [Linked Image]

Found the skull of a Mountain Bison back in my native CO when I was elk hunting at about age 18. Mountain Bison went extinct about 1850 or so. I have it hanging on the wall of my place in CO next to the door. On the other side of the door I have the skull of a modern Plains Bison. So when you look at the door it is bracketed with those 2 skulls. Pretty cool.

I don’t know much about mountain bison. Are they the same as the woodland bison you find in Canada?

What caused their demise? I wouldn’t think there was a lot of folks in Colorado in the 1850’s. I’ll have to look it up

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Never found anything too interesting. As a kid visiting family one of my great uncles always had a big 7x7 white tail rack mounted with a scull cap on the wall. I asked him about why he hadn't shoulder mounted it and he said he found it dead while hunting on a quail lease.

Some years back I shot a big stinkin' old boar and buried the head, thinking it'd make a poor-man's Euro mount. When I dug it up and cleaned it a bit, I found that some time in its past it had been shot full-face with bird shot.

I found a pig skull with a hole between it's eyes. I guess it was a discarded head.

The find wasn't so interesting, but the history was...at least to me.

A few years ago, a guy and his boy on our lease were out hunting. The boy shot at his first buck, one of which i had seen in person prior. He was a good mature buck that was fairly heavy, tall, but not real wide. He was a great first buck for the kid. Anyways, the kid shot him in a light rain. He and his dad searched for him but couldnt find him. His dad went out the next few days to see if he could come up with the deer and nothing. Fast forward to the following spring, and I'm out driving around in the mule looking for a new area to set a blind up, and low and behold, I see some antlers sticking up out of the grass under a big oak. Sure enough, it was that boy's buck. I took a picture and sent it to his dad. They were out of town, so we arranged to meet up the following weekend and he wasn't going to tell his boy about it. Sure enough, we meet up and it didnt quite register to this 7 year old that it was his buck until we told him i had found his deer. His dad took it to a taxidermist, who did an amazing job.

I'll edit to add pics when i find them. Edit, found a couple.

I took the skull to the Natural History Museum in Denver and they said it is basically a minor subspecies of the plains bison that lived in small isolated pockets in the high country. Not sure what clobbered them. Perhaps the mountain men? After they looked it over they told me that they had 2 in the collection and weren't interested in mine so I took it home.

I found this skull in a Fort Campbell training/hunting area early one morning back in 2006 when I was on my way to my stand. IIRC, taped out at about 130. I cleaned it up, whitened the skull and stained the antlers. Came out pretty good.

This guy scored 187. We found him dead after the acorn gorge of 2018. These pictures do not do him justice.

My daughter shot this guy opening day about 12 years ago.
He had previously been shot in the face with an arrow is my best guess.
We discovered it while doing the Euro mount. His back teeth had been knocked loose too.
We heard later that one of the boys on the lease next door tried to head shoot a buck a big buck and claimed that he missed. He didn't miss, he maimed.

Are you sure it is a Sika shed? I have seen whitetail spikes that big. It would be a trophy WT to me. Don't know much about Sika.
