What do y'all think good old original southern cornbread is? What I'm really asking is if real southern cornbread is sweet or savory?

my MIL switched over to using the HEB hill country fair package mixes for both regular and sweet cornbread ... she said it was just about as good as her homemade but a heck of a lot easier.

Just slightly sweet..... This and more cornmeal than flour. All great southern cooks know that you pour the oil in the pan to heat it rather than in the batter, and Cast is wrong. Its comes out just fine when baked in a non-stick pan.

White stone ground cornmeal, baking soda, salt, baking powder, eggs, fat and buttermilk. Preheat iron skillet with a tablespoon of bacon grease and pour and bake. No sugar.

One of thousands of great recipes. I never knew that people used sugar in their cornbread until I was in my 20's. Skillet or no skillet, another thought, do it however you want. I like cornbread either way, no preference as long as it doesn't have sugar in it.

I put about 2-3t of sugar in mine, you can barely tell it’s there. And yes, I have more corn meal than flour, and pour the batter into the skillet with a little melted lard. About 20 minutes in a cast iron skillet at 400 degrees. We had some yesterday
