Strange and lucky . The local toms are still not responding to calls . I had a very nice tom show up at the feeder at 165 yards . It was clear and calm so I took the base of the neck shot with the .223 60 grain . The bird went down very slowly and was trying to get back up . He had a sliver dollar size entrance wound right under the wing and no exit . I was trying to figure out how you have no exit from a .223 on a bird . I then saw that I had hit the feeder guide wire that was 3 feet in front of the bird . The flattened bullet was found stuck in the breast bone in the middle of the bird .

Sometimes things seem to jump in the path of the bullet, at least you got him.

Things do jump in front of bullets.
I shot a doe once that had a few tufts of tall grass in line on the shot close to the deer that I felt I could get a shot through on an opening. I was shooting a 300 wby with a 150grn bullet. A very fast load. The deer gutted itself on the shot. Just fell out on the ground standing there like it was cut cross ways across the belly with a knife. When I was washing the deer out at camp I could see it had several small holes in the rib cage with no main bullet hole. The bullet had obviously hit one or more blades of grass and shattered just before hitting the deer. Parts of the jacket must have sliced across the belly just behind the rib cage. I went to a heavier bullet after that experience.
