My wife and me used to pick them all the time back when we were young.
The girl can make a dewberry cobbler that is sublime.

and yes snakes and chiggers can be present as well......

The dewberries in my area seldom grow above knee high.

They're actually 2 slightly different species. True dewberries stay pretty close to the ground and the berries aren't quite as big as a blackberry. Blackberry vines can get pretty big and the berries very large. You would be hard-pressed to tell the difference in taste between the two though. I've picked wild blackberries in GA,VA,TX and OK.

Chiggers? confused2

Stickers on the vines. No chiggers.

My grandma made us dewberry pies from the berries we picked. I miss her and those pies! Both were the best!

Dad and Mom would find a place along the railroad track and then turn us 4 kids loose! They would sit in the car and watch while we harvested those dewberries and fed the resident chiggers and mosquitoes! We'd be itchin' and scratchin' for a few days afterwards. but got very little sympathy from the folks!! Loved us some dewberry pie and dewberry cobbles, especially when there was a scoop of home-made ice cream on top. (BTW, we kids were responsible for cranking the handle on the ice cream maker, and feeding it the ice and salt it required!)

Just made a dewberry cobbler last night. Plan to get a ton more and do some jellies, preserves, pies, etc.

Did run a cross a good sized copperhead while getting them! Snakes boots are always on, as extra insurance.
