Great question. I was wondering the same thing.

Maybe JES can help answer that.

I know as juveniles the tips of their tails are kind of a day-glow yellow color. These have it and it helps to spot them. Other snakes like Cottonmouths have this as well when they are young. Normally what I look for with Copperheads is the Hershey Kiss’s on their sides. It’s not always a sure fire way to identify a Copperhead though because some have a broad band stripes as well. I’ve even seen a copperhead that had spots all over it. It depends on your location and the species (I think there are 5)

Here is a great pic of the classic Hershey Kiss pattern

All snakes can have slight color variants depending on their environment and diet...

Texas actually has three sub-species of copperheads:

1) Southern (Hershey kisses) in eastern Texas...

2) Broadband central Texas

3) Trans-Pecos in the Big Bend area

When I worked for TPWD (state parks) years ago I would give an interpretive program I called "Snake Talks" to campers, scout troops, and schools. I had a metal trash can with the bottom cut out of it and some clear totes with different snakes. I had a rat snake and gopher snake that people could hold or touch.

I had a few southern copperheads, I kept one in the clear tote then would take the trashcan over to the leaf litter, screw it back and forth so I had a good seal around the base then put three or four copperheads inside and let people walk by and try to find them....most were shocked by how hard it was to see them.

I also had a young diamondback rattlesnake that I would talk about bite dynamics then feed a mouse to the snake....

It was a good time....haven't done anything like that in quite a while....

That sounds like an awesome learning experience and a good time for all.

I joined a snake identification group on Facebook a couple years back and it’s pretty neat. People from all over the world post a pic of the snake they found, along with location, and then the moderators correctly identify it and give tips on what to look for. At first I thought just about everything in the water was a cottonmouth when they were actually just water snakes. Now that I know what to look for, I can usually ID them pretty quick. Snakes don’t freak me out near as much anymore either. They’re kinda cool!

4.
I killed what I think was a baby cotton mouth in the yard a few days ago.... Since kids romp through the area frequently I dispatched him.
My grandmother called last night and said there was a chicken snake in her hen house.
I hop on the Mule, and I get down there, and it's hanging in the door hinges on between the door and the wall,
She said, "I went out there too close up the chickens, I tried to close the door, and it wouldn't close all the way, so I opened it and slammed it, and it still wouldn't close! I slammed the door 3 or 4 times and it kept bouncing back and finally I saw the snake..."
I kid you not, that snake had a dent in him were the door was closing on him . I caught him and took him way off and let him go.

It was a baby, was told they can't regulate the venom so just inject it all. He ended up temporarily paralyzed on the kitchen floor crapping himself till paramedics arrived. Someone on here was the responding paramedic, but can't remember who it was. He was transported to Presby Flower Mound, exhausted all their anti-venom and then transferred by CareFlite to JPS.
