Interesting contrast between shots on hogs during successive nights. I made a longer distance shot (230 yards) on a hog where the shot was low and did not go through the body as intended, but worked out great... On the next night, I made a shot at a shorter distance (155 yards) that I thought was good, but did not have the intended result...

Good job keeping on the 2nd hog!
I have two unwritten rules: 1. 2.

Smart to make it your practice of immediately getting a second sight picture on downed hogs. I imagine you noticed that hog started out on his side...but fairly quickly got his front legs 'under him' (a sure sign they are going to get up, or try to). You've shot enough hogs to also recognize the initial 'kicking' was not CNS like. Good job.

I was so happy to see someone NOT shoot through a fence and make sure the target was a good one, acquire the target and not shoot at first impulse.
Good work DNS. You are an example for us all!!

You've shot enough hogs to also recognize the initial 'kicking' was not CNS like. Good job. Well, if you have only one hog, what are ya gonna do? Might as well keep your eye on it for a bit or just shoot it again. I should have just shot it again, but was hopeful there might be more hogs on the other side of the hill from where I was and didn't want to make the extra noise if I didn't need to do so. You know, I have had several hogs go to their bellies after being shot. Only 2 of those died that way (granted, one was leaning against a telephone pole). The others mostly just went ahead and rolled over with a curly shuffle, a few (like this one) tried to escape, and a couple were just plain alive and not trying to get away. I definitely agree a hog on its belly is one that should be considered viable.

Whats the math on leading a target by that much? I would have thought the second bullet would have hit closer to the neck at that distance? A flier maybe?
They make ammo specifically for hunting for a reason!

Flyer? I haven't seen any such flyers previously. Depends on how fast the hog is running.

Whats your rule of thumb on a running hog? Honestly, I'm not good at it. Nor dove for that matter, but that's another issue all together!

Whats your rule of thumb on a running hog? Honestly, I'm not good at it. Nor dove for that matter, but that's another issue all together! You just develop a 'feel' for it. There is no 'formula' or rule of thumb really. Distance (bullet travel time), speed of the hog (faster requires more lead) AND angle (hogs running 90° to the shooter require the most lead) all play a part. With experience....your 'brain' sort of calculates it all and tells you how far to swing ahead and when to tap the trigger.

Akin to what flint is saying, it is like passing a football to a receiver who is moving down field. You develop a feel for it. It is a perishable skill, I have found, that goes away fairly quickly without practice.
My only rule of thumb is that unless they are really close or running straight toward or away from me, I try not to aim at the hog. That seems to be the surest way to miss.

I try to remember the lead that you take on these shots. I have been able some time to connect, but most of the time I don't lead enough. Great videos as usual.
