I have a pecan tree in the front yard that puts out paper shell pecans, I think. they are fairly long and thick. they sprout where the squirrels bury them in the flower beds so I dug up a couple of the sprouts and put them in a container. will these grow to be a tree and put out the same fruit?

No need to put them in a container unless you don't like the location. They will grow up either way but you will still have to graft onto the root stock. You can get clippings from the tree that you now have or from differen varieties. Its a labor of love and patients.

Wait a few years until they are as tall as you are. Google should show you the way. You can use a limb of the same size or buds. My daddy did several when I was growing up.

they seem to grow just fine all by themselves out in the wilderness.

They will come back native unless they are grafted

Your county extension agemt should have a pamphlet on how to do this.

As Bill said, patience is necessary. It takes pecan trees 7 years on average to produce. Good luck.

Yep. Some of mine are over 80 years old.

I’ve done quite a few of them.
Soak the nut in water for about a week. Get a bucket with a drain hole in the bottom. Fill it with soil. Plant the nut just below the ground with the pointy end up. Keep the soil lightly moist. I like to plant 4 or 5 nuts. Keep the best one and let it grow in the bucket for awhile. Transplant when you get ready. It is best to use an area that gets and holds moisture. I’ve never seen a pecan tree on top of a hill.

Btw, paper shells have to be grafted. All trees planted from nuts will be natives with the hard nut.

It's a little weird. I live in pecan country. Feed stores all buy pecans. They only buy the natives. That's what is used in most recipes, especially pecan pralines..

The natives are good but I like the ability to crack the pecan with my hand. It also seems like for the size you get more meat in a paper shell.

Candy makers use natives because they have more flavor. They are a PIA to shell though.

I don't disagree with any of you. Would love to have a couple of grafted trees.

Natives have a lot more oil in them(flavor) than paper shell.

PSA . If you decide to put one in, don't plant in near your flower beads or near your house. Roundup will not kill the sprouts. Thank me later.
